We’re barely into the preseason and the drama that this team is known for is clearly in mid-season form. With the team’s two best players still unsigned restricted free agents and not in camp, today we learned that one of the team’s veteran defencemen is contemplating retirement.

Travis Hamonic is currently away from the team for personal reasons, and there are reports that he may take use of the league’s opt-out clause and announce his retirement. You may remember that Hamonic opted out of the 2020 playoffs over health concerns with his family, and this is likely the driving force behind it. NM’s Trevor Beggs has more on this situation here.

Tonight’s game is at least going to be streamed at CDC, so Canucks fans can get their first real glimpse of Vasily Podkolzin in blue and green as they host the Flames in Abbotsford. And while last night’s lineup was a typical pre-season type roster, tonight is going to look let’s say, a little more NHL worthy?

LINEUPS

Obviously there’s a lot of excitement for the debuts of Podkolzin, as well as Conor Garland and Oliver Ekman-Larsson in Canucks uniforms. We’ll also get some far more familiar names as Bo Horvat, J.T. Miller, Tyler Myers, Tanner Pearson and Zack MacEwan are in tonight.

Flames projected lineup

Andrew Mangiapane - Dillon Dube - Brett Ritchie

Jakob Pelletier - Adam Ruzicka - Matthew Phillips

Martin Pospisil - Glenn Gawdin - Luke Philp

Justin Kirkland - Byron Froese - Walker Duehr

Juuso Valimaki - Michael Stone

Oliver Kylington - Kevin Gravel

Connor Mackey - Nick DeSimone

Dan Vladar

Adam Werner

Definitely more of an AHL kinda lineup for the Flames tonight, who lost 4-0 to the Oilers in their first preseason contest last night. One player to watch is Matthew Phillips, who was outstanding in the WHL with the Victoria Royals.

GAME DAY CHATTER

Kudos to the Canucks for giving this some attention tonight.

GAME DAY BATTLE HYMN

Bay Area thrash metal legends EXODUS are back with a new album and sounding as ferocious as ever. Check out ‘The Beatings Will Continue (Until Morale Improves)’ from ‘Persona Non Grata’, out now on Nuclear Blast Records.

Enjoy the game as the Podkolzin Era begins. Go Canucks Go!
