Yesterday, the Canucks made a couple roster cuts, loaning Danila Klimovich to the AHL Abbotsford Canucks, and placing Jonah Gadjovich on waivers for the purpose of moving him to the Canucks new farm squad. It was a risk, as the San Jose Sharks snagged the tough winger this morning.

The focus tonight will be on who’s back, and that would be Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes. Both of the recently re-signed Canucks stars will see their first pre-season action tonight against the Oilers. While both players, who are looking to have bounce back seasons after differing degrees of disappointment in their performances last season, would have liked a little more time to get geared up, I would expect they’ll both get close to their normal ice time tonight and Saturday.

LINEUPS

This is as close to what the opening night lineup should be as we’ve seen so far, though there’s still some auditioning going on in Travis Green’s lineup tonight. Justin Bailey’s also getting his first preseason game after having to miss most of training camp in quarantine after a positive COVID test kept him from entering the country. Jack Rathbone, William Lockwood, Sheldon Dries, Carson Focht, Kyle Burroughs, Brad Hunt and Madison Bowey are in tonight to get a likely last look, and Alex Chaisson is still hanging in there in his PTO. It should be interesting to see what kind of performance he has against his former team.

Courtesy of nhl.com, this is the Oilers lineup for tonight:

Forwards:

Draisaitl - McDavid - Puljujarvi

Hyman - RNH - Turris

Foegele - Ryan - Kassian

Benson - McLeod - Sceviour

Defence:

Nurse - Barrie

Keith - Ceci

Russell - Bouchard

Goal:

Smith

Skinner

Apart from Skinner in the backup role, this is pretty close to what to expect them to start the season with, though no Kailer Yamamoto and Slater Koekkoek tonight.
