RECAP #8: NUCKS WIN!!! Defeat The Eastern Provinces 7-1

Foundations Rocked in the ROG by Sutter’s Hattie

NHL: Ottawa Senators at Vancouver Canucks

The Nucks needed this game. We needed this win.

The Nucks need to play the last place team in the division for 10 games. 20 would be better.

The Canucks put an exclamation mark on their 2nd worst standings in the division. Actually it’s more than that! Nucks are one point ahead of the Red Nucks. Sure, Blue Nucks have played twice as many games, but that’s not the point.

The point is the Nucks aren’t a horrible team when playing against the Sens. It’s a point they must keep making. All week.

Since the Nucks and me must remain humble until the big 500 rolls into the swagger zone, will stay with the recap format that served us so well last week.

The Good:

Nucks win! For just the 3rd time in 8 outings. How is that good? Absence makes the cheers grow fonder.

Foundational Hat Trick! Sutz gets his first hattie in his long and storied NHL career in just his 735th game!

Sutter scored in every period of the game! Backhand wizard of 2021.

Another period, another foundational goal. Short handed.

The Hat de Resistance.

The only downside of our foundational 3rd line center is... NM will complain he’s underpaid. Hotlby threw his hat on the ice. JB just needs to fill it up.

Huggie gets a goal. (1st of the season) (wish Montreal had traded Price for Murray)

Benn was the best partner so far for Hughes.

Demko gets a shutout! (until Myers spoiled it). This was Demmer’s first win of the season. He made some big saves at key times - especially at the end of the 1st and 2nd.

Nucks PK was 100% perfect. Better than perfect with the shortie in the 2nd.

No longer 31st in Goal Diff - ownership of that stat now belongs to the Sens.

The Bad:

Nucks still hold the not-coveted 31st spot in GA and last in SOG as well.

Myers’ loyalty still seems divided between the Nucks Gift Wrapping Department and the Nucks Own Goal Tip Team.

Sutter has more goals than Pete, Miller and Huggie combined so far this season.

The 1st line struggles continue. Tonight it was Miller time on the freakin’ frontiers of frustration.

Miller was so fighting it, he took 2 penalties - that didn’t need taking. Except for Sutz getting a shortie on his 2nd visit to the Myers Bin of Sin.

The Lotto Line is not feeling lucky. Or confident. They are so talented that the only thing keeping them from leading the Nucks in scoring is confidence, playing for each other and shoot, shoot, shooting more! With less turning over.

Rous had a lot of penalties - slashing, roughing and fighting, but 2 of them for excessive jersey tugging. He’s not a fighter, he’s a tugger. Almost scored an own goal in the 2nd on the PK so Demmer had to be sharp.

Here’s the fight card from the night. Is that so bad?

Zac got 2 penalties at once - one for interference and one for fighting.

The Lovely:

Nils showing us those Swedish player skills - making plays when prone.

Olli gets his 1st NHL goal!

After all the setbacks Juolevi has been through it’s great to see him play in the NHL, for reals.

This game was the tonic the Nucks needed. While there were some moments of fire drill practice, Demko kept them in the game when needed and Suttsy ran the scoreboard into the sunset.

What is even more lovely is the 2 Johns call this historic, possibly foundational game of the season.

Sutter having traded hits mitts of stone for gloves of goals, takes the presser pressure happily.

Demko had the SO on a leash. Not quite short enough. But finally looked like the stolen summer saves goalie we remember.

No Green zoom presser release from the Nucks. Maybe he wanted to stop his effusive praise for Nils effusing across the internet.

The big Nucks improvement was the dropping of turnovers. Only 7 on the night. Still not great, but 4 less than the last game and 1 less than the Sens. Baby baker steps.

Need to close the bakery for the rest of the week. Let the Sens use their visiting kitchen for baking snacks and give them to Pete to taste test.

Not an unexpected outcome. And a desperately needed win is just as good, possibly better, than a gratuitous one. The Sens used to play in the same division as the Habs. Now they play in ours. Thankfully. Hope they continue to play just slightly looser and worser than the Nucks.

I want to be sympathetic to their last place cause. But only after the Nucks are closer to the top places after another 2 home wins. That’s only fair. To us.

The big Nucking improvement we want to see next game is the top line taking their frustrations out on the NHL scorekeeper.

They’re due. And no one, not even Kent, wants to rely on Suttsy’s goal song in the next couple games.

Let’s stay focused and play team full D. In the game thread and on the ice.
