PLAYOFFS ROUND 1 GAME 4 RECAP: NUCKS Lose 3-1 To The Blues & Exhaustion

Got them right where we want ‘em - evened up and over-confident

Ok... not the best Nucks game in this series. The most tired Nucks performance of the series? Only by 7 degrees of fatigue.

Other than exhaustion and the vital performance of special teams, the Nucks only needed to heed Westy’s sage advice pre-game:

Just like after the first loss to Minnesota, the Canucks are going to have to score early and be better 5 on 5 against the Blues to stop any momentum that team feels they have.

Simple game plan. I like it.

There’s that small issue of execution, however. Which isn’t as small as we’d like.

How not small? Pretty big not small.

First issue, it’s a back-to-back game. Marky doesn’t do well in B-2-Bs. Second, neither does the game thread. We’re still not anywhere near playoff ready. Empty bottle count excepted.

Also... Nucks are still missing Myers. And Toffee. And rest.

So... how bad was it?

Let’s not find out.

1st Period

The Bruisers have woken up and discovered the discount flights out of Northern Alberta aren’t great.

Like last game, they decide to play heavy. Dirty and heavy.

Not a problem tho, because the refs are calling at least 1 in 10 Blues egregious plays.

However, the problem is the 50+% successful Nucks 1st unit is having an off night. Like 0% effective.

And worse, the Nucks legendary PK was only 66% effective.

And worse, ROR, the least-liked player other than Perron and 10 others.

When the ref whistle dust settled, it was 1-0 Blues after 1. Ugh. Already the Nucks have forsaken Westy’s prime directive. And mine.

This is the first time the Bloozers have gotten the 1st goal of the game. They’re taking away our specialness. And our special teams.

Nucks are outshot 13-11. And out big boyed.

Game thread tho... is looking for the silver linings (in all the wrong places).

1st period was disappointing

Canucks PP was flat.

Jake was non-existent.

And Brock has never really shown up. — Westy

And worse... Twitchy is pumping the optimist tires.

I dunno if I agree

except about the flat PP, Brock and Jake… But overall I thought that was a good, fairly even period. We can win this game if the boys stay focused and edler doesn’t edle. — Twitchy

The Nucks generally win when Twitchy is displeased, when he’s sticking up the the Nucks...well...

It’s a proper penalty parade. Box after box - it’s a russian doll on skates. It’s a bad figurine metaphor, but not as poor as the Nucks PP.

2nd Period

Fine. Down one after one. Not the end of the playoffs (have to wait 2 more games for that).

And the Nucks aren’t giving up the lead for long. Not when it’s Miller time in the great burning frozen north.

From a shot from Eddie and a tip from JT and the game is tied.

Want to see that again? Me too.

But what we want to see is another Nucks goal. And another one after that.

But we don’t. And that’s why they call playoff hockey a game of small disappointments.

Or in NM-speek, Freakin’ Huge Disappointments!

The Special Team Nucks have no top corner specials left. And the 5-on-5 Canucks are better 4-on-4.

Also... our top defensive pairing is not at the top of the game. Blues score.

Sweet Lord

Edler/Stetcher looked terrible on that goal — Westy

And worse, it’s a ROR goal 5-on-5. I don’t like this new engaged ROR. Not one bit.

But, wait there’s more!

Unfortunately.

The refs still need to even-up the series. And it starts with Zack sliding into Allen. It’s a horrendous infraction!

That was a crap call — Westy

2 Minutes for getting mobbed by the Blues — radivel

But wait! The game thread is figuring out the rules the refs make up as they go along.

I’m starting to figure out the nhl rules

It’s ok to bowl over the goalie if he’s wearing blue and green, but it’s penalty if he’s wearing white and blue. Got it. — Twitchy

— Addendum

— Only blue men can board with impunity - s.cynic

And now it’s a 5-on-3. And not for our fav team. The other one. The big ugly one.

It’s another ref-sponsored PP goal for the Blues. At least it wasn’t scored by ROR. So there’s still a tiny amount of hope left in the bottle.

Or is there?

Any suggestions?

The Nucks are over-matched when their PP doesn’t work — Westy

When Westy asks for game strategy suggestions mid-game, you know it won’t end well. Despite the great suggestions we offered.

It’s 3-1 Blues after 2. They’ve out played the tired Nucks and out shot them 17-5! Yikes!

The refs have evened the penalty parade. 3 Nucks boxes to 1 for the Blues. That’s fair and balanced.

2nd Team Penalty
00:49 STL Colton Parayko Delaying Game - Puck over glass
08:25 VAN Alexander Edler Tripping against Jaden Schwartz
13:51 VAN Zack MacEwen Roughing against Jake Allen
14:59 VAN Oscar Fantenberg Boarding against Robert Thomas

3rd Period

Fine. We’re down 2 goals against a team that dominates us 5-on-5, our power play is not powering up and Nuck luck is looking for new staff.

In other words. We’re screwed.

Or are we?

Twitchy is lashing out with the keyboard of fury...

Man

this period and last the canucks are looking scared a lot of the time… it’s like they’re more worried about protecting themselves than making the play. The big blues hits are making them back off. They need to lower their collective give-a-fuck level about facing pain.

—Twitchy

The Nucks are lashing out with the skates of fatigue.

Not even Marky’s expert advice to the refs can help.

The grind is wearing us down. Not just in the game thread. The Nucks get 3 PP chances in the period and even a 6-on-4 extra-special sequence at the end of the period.

It doesn’t help. No OT on this night. Only the faint, so very faint memory from last week of dreaming of sweeping the former champs.

Not even the game thread can spin this around the ice.

Well

we got completely outplayed that game. The team really looked low energy for 50 minutes of that game. — Twitchy

Nucks get all the parade spots. But no goals. Not fair.

3rd Team Penalty
05:32 STL Brayden Schenn Hi-sticking against J.T. Miller
13:53 STL Vince Dunn Slashing against Antoine Roussel
18:39 STL Carl Gunnarsson Slashing against Brock Boeser

What did we learn from this game?

B-2-B games are not our friends. The Nucks are tired. Capt’n Bo isn’t winning the Selke. We’re not even sure if we’re winning this series.

Not that we were meant to. The nice thing about being an underdog, is that when you under-perform, that’s normal.

But how’d the underdogs feel about getting dog-tired in a bubble hockey game?

That’s 2 losses out of the way. Now that the Blues have gotten a ton of momentum, maybe they’ll put Beenington back in net and we can win 2 more. Or not.

Let’s take this loss like we took the other one. On our fragile Nuckled chin.

The Nucks aren’t out of this series. But, there’s plenty of time for that. The Nucks PP needs to comeback from the no-score zone and fill the net with pucks, fill our hearts with joy and our bellies with rum. We can cover that vital final task.
