NHL 2020 Playoffs: Round One Open Thread Day 1

Playoff hockey all day? Playoff hockey ALL DAY!

NHL: Tampa Bay Lightning at Columbus Blue Jackets Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

It’s damn near the middle of August and here at the er... office, it’s hot as balls in Southern Ontario. So why not wrap up whatever work from home project you’re doing, order some food and sit back so you can watch 4 playoff hockey games, In August.

And man, does it start out with a doozy, as we get a rematch of the biggest upset from last year’s playoffs!

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS VS TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING- 12:00PM PDT- Sportsnet/NBCSN

Round One gets underway as Tampa looks to avoid the same fate of last year when John Tortorella’s Columbus Blue Jackets swept them in the opening round. The Jackets are already in upset mode, having kicked Toronto out of their own bubble (how rude!) and would love nothing more than a repeat of last year. And while CBJ ain’t exactly gonna sneak up on the Bolts this year, they could be facing a Tampa team that starts the series without Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman.

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS VS VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS- 2:30 PDT- Sportsnet/CBC/NBCSN

Along with Montreal’s defeat of Pittsburgh, the Hawks taking down Connor McDavid and the Oilers was one of the biggest playoff upsets in a while. And their reward? A date against Vegas. Can they pull some more magic outta their helmets? If there was a team in this round primed for a shameful upset loss, it’s Vegas.

CAROLINA HURRICANES VS BOSTON BRUINS- 5:00PM PDT- Sportsnet/CBC/NBCSN

It’s another rematch from last year, this one featuring a Bunch of Jerks going up against a Bunch of Massholes. Boston swept Carolina on their way to the Finals, but don’t count on that happening again. The Bruins have looked mortal since the restart, while the Canes were full value for their sweep over the Rangers.

CALGARY FLAMES VS DALLAS STARS- 7:30PM PDT- Sportsnet/CBC/NBCSN

The Flames dispatched a Winnipeg Jets team without their two best players, and now go up against the Tyler Seguin-less Dallas Stars. Dallas limped into this tournament with just 3 wins in their last 10, including the Round Robin portion of the Play-in. They need to be better in all aspects of their game or their post-season is gonna be over in a hurry.
