SBN Reacts: So You’re Saying There’s A Chance?

To the surprise of almost no one, Vancouver fans are pretty sure it won’t be Bo Horvat and the Canucks will be the ones raising the Cup in October.

As the NHL prepares to restart the 2020 season, fans have reassessed where they think their favorite team stands.

In the latest SB Nation Reacts survey, NHL fans were asked if they believe their favorite team is a serious championship contender. Or, if their team is no longer playing, who that fanbase will turn to now.

With the seventh best record in the Western Conference, Vancouver fans aren’t confident in the team. Fewer than 10 percent of fans believe the Canucks have a serious shot at the Stanley Cup.

This is hardly a shock, really. This team was on the bubble in March, were missing their season MVP Jacob Markstrom and had a tough schedule awaiting them. The pandemic, subsequent cancellation of the remainder of the regular season and new playoff format have given the Canucks a glimmer of hope when they might not have had one.

The Canucks return to action Sunday for their qualifying round series against the Minnesota Wild.

There isn’t much of a silver lining for fans if things go wrong. According to the survey, only 23% of fans would want their team to tank for an opportunity to draft Alexis Lafrenière. Honestly though, this is a pretty good spot for the Canucks to be in. Lose in this round, they could end up with the 1st overall pick for the first time in franchise history. Win, and they make the playoffs in a year they probably shouldn’t have, garnering some much needed playoff experience for the young core of this squad. Sure, it’s pretty unlikely that the Canucks could go all the way, let alone get out of the Western Conference. Either way, there’s hockey to be played, and as a Canucks fan you have to be thrilled they have a shot, no matter how small.
