Canucks 2019-20 Playoff Report Cards: Loui Eriksson

New, comments

Is it time for Loui to be reported and carded?

A bench staple in the play-in round

At this juncture of a normal season, the Nucks would be sliding into a long losing skid. But we’d still have Loui.

In a normal summer we’d be out cutting the grass and secretly hoping that JB would be making some trades. But we’d still have Loui.

In the new Covidian era, we had playoffs in the summer, no hockey in November and we still have Loui.

Seems we’re in year seventeen of Loui’s 6 year contract. That’s the sort of magic Loui can create for astute NM followers of the Tre timeline. The tres tres expensive timeline.

The end of that timeline is near. Somewhere between now and the heat death of the universe.

But, here’s the thing... as much as we whine about Loui’s fat contract and near infinite term, he provides something more valuable to us than time, money and no goals.

He stepped up and took a vital role on the team. A role briefly held by such marquis players like Gudbranson, Del Zotto, Gaunce and Schaller.

The Prestigious #1 Fan Scapegoat role. It’s a pretend role, but still vital to the points I probably won’t get around to make.

None of those pretenders to the throne of fan annoyance have endeared our wrath for so long and persevered with such a cool, calm $36,000,000 demeanor for so long. You can’t put a price on that.

Ok, you can... Six Million times a season. Pretty sure even swimming in a Rolls Royce gushing with gourmet rum, Westy and I couldn’t spend $36M. In a weekend.

But I digress. But, for a reason... so has Loui. Or regressed. Whatever.

When the Nucks we’re among the lucky 24 selected to spend the best part of summer in a stanky Edmonton hotel, we knew we could count on Loui.

To be sorta sound defensively and make us scream at the NHL cap gods about what we could do with an extra $6M to spend. On a season that hasn’t started. On players we can’t afford.

Strengths

Did you miss those vital paragraphs above?

Let’s just let Loui’s consistent performances in the heat of the summer speak for themselves.

Weaknesses

Did you not see the stats above?

Worse, Mr. Empty Netter did not. Not a single EN in 10 games. That’s the kind of regression that only $36M can buy.

Maybe the stats are wrong. Maybe Loui scored and we all missed it. Let’s run the tape and find out.

Nope, not a single goal or assist. Sure, that was a 14 minute distraction from the report at hand... but wow! Some of those goals were fun to watch again in the dark days of this November hockey drought.

Best Attribute

Uh... stop me if you know this one... Uh... stoicism. Yeah, that’s it! Loui has given us nothing if not the stoic steadfastness of a guy who knows his contract sucks (for us), but didn’t complain about it.

Loui left that for us. That’s pretty nice.

In fact, Loui sparked some vintage game thread banter - except there was no game and not much banter... but still... Loui made it onto the Nucks Untouchable Player list. Again.

So, four un-touchables, right?

Petey, Quinn, Thatcher and Bo.

That's five un-touchables! - Atty

Six

You forgot Loui. Nice try tho - jimmi

no one forgets Loui - Westy

trust me man...

i've tried to forget about loui for a couple seasons now. I keep failing. - Twitchy

Only 700+ sleepless nights left to be grumpy on the lumpy NM lounge couch. Unless... dare to... nah... not buying the buyout gambit.

Overall

While Loui kept us from resigning Marky, Toffee and Stetch, or one of them, there’s lots to be said about consistent year-in, year-out over-paying. You can’t over-say that often enough.

Grade: E- (because... EEEK!)

Disagree? Fine. Only way to settle it is with a scientific NM Poll

Loui earned...er.. deserves a grade of:
