It took a while for us to get there (and holy hell, is it a chore sitting through this version of the draft), but the Vancouver Canucks have chosen Finnish defender Joni Jurmo with their first pick of the draft, at 82nd overall.
NHL scout on Canucks draft pick D Joni Jurmo : Smooth skating defender. This is a big kid with great size. Very skilled and good speed with mobility. Moves the puck well and has good range.#TSN1040— Rick Dhaliwal (@DhaliwalSports) October 7, 2020
Jurmo was ranked #20 among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting, so for him to be available could end up being a steal for the Canucks should he pan out. He seems to have a skillset that will allow him to fit in with the style that the Canucks are playing under Travis Green, and his size on the back end will be a bonus as well.
He had a good showing at the most recent World U20 tournament, putting up 3-3-6 in 4 games for Finland, and after a great season in the top Finnish Jr league last year is up with JYP in the Finnish Liiga this season.
This is a work in progress, no doubt. But with a number of strong elements to his game, with the right development, he could fit in well with the Canucks down the road.
The Canucks next pick is in Round 4, at #113 overall.
