Chasing King Lundqvist & Navigating the Canucks Salary Cap | Silky N’ Filthy Podcast

We roll out the blue and green carpet for Henrik Lundqvist and Patrick Maroon on the latest episode of Silky N’ Filthy.

Vancouver, British Columbia...seems like a place that would be fit for a king.

That’s why on the latest episode of Silky N’ Filthy, Kyle Bhawan and myself roll out the blue and green carpet for former New York Ranger Henrik Lundqvist to become a member of the Vancouver Canucks.

After looking at the Canucks cap situation, it doesn’t take long to realize that Jacob Markstrom probably isn’t coming back to this team. That’s especially true if the Canucks still want to lock down Tyler Toffoli as well.

If Thatcher Demko is going to be the Canucks starter, it makes sense so sign a veteran back-up. Don’t kind yourself into thinking the Canucks can afford Corey Crawford, Thomas Greiss or Anton Khudobin, who will all likely command at least $3.5 million per season.

Lundqvist on the other hand, who has made $100 million in his career (before taxes, according to CapFriendly), could likely be had on a one or two year deal worth $1 to $2 million per season.

If Markstrom does indeed leave, the Canucks know they need to keep that Swedish connection alive on the team. Just imagine the Canucks with two of the most stylish dudes in the league with Lundqvist and Elias Pettersson.

Patrick Maroon, Come On Down

Earlier this week on The Quickie, I mentioned how the Canucks need to inject some speed into their bottom six.

Then, we flipped the script and decided that Pat Maroon should also receive the blue and green carpet rollout. Figure that one out.

Maroon, who just won two straight Stanley Cups will making less than a quarter of what Loui Eriksson has made over the past two years, is a great target if you want to break that idea of speed in the bottom six.

For nearly a decade, Maroon has been a physical force and a reliable point producer. Even better, he’s actually been healthy.

You know Jim Benning loves him some Patrick Maroon. As we saw this year in Tampa Bay, the right veteran leadership is important on a hockey team, as long as they can still play hockey (cough...Jay Beagle).

In case you’re wondering how the hell the Canucks might be able to afford Maroon and Lundqvist, I took a hypothetical crack at it here, where they come in $800,000 below the salary cap.

This assumes that the Canucks:

  • Don’t qualify Jake Virtanen.
  • Let Chris Tanev and Jacob Markstrom walk.
  • Buy out Sven Baertschi and Brandon Sutter.
  • Bury Loui Eriksson in the minors.

I also have them signing Dylan DeMelo here as a cheaper, more effective Tanev replacement although we’ll look to address the Oliver Ekman-Larsson rumours in another post. I did talk about he possibility of him coming to Vancouver earlier this week on The Quickie Podcast.

This was a hilariously fun episode of Silky N’ Filthy (with a lot of puck talk and bullshit, if you could already tell). It also marked my last in studio recording in some time at the PostedUp Studios in Burnaby, where Kyle and I record the podcast.

With my first child on the way, along with hockey season winding down, it’s time to do a couple home records before bidding the listeners adieu for the offseason.

We appreciate everyone who’s tagged along for the ride throughout this season, and especially those who stuck around throughout the 5 month hockey hiatus. It’s been a fun ride.
