Patrick Maroon scores the double OT dagger as the Blues improbable run continues.

ST LOUIS BLUES 2 DALLAS STARS 1 (2OT)- (St Louis wins series 4-3)

St Louis-born Patrick Maroon scored the winner in double OT last night as the St Louis Blues are on their way to the Western Conference Finals. The Blues finally managed to get one past Dallas Stars G Ben Bishop, who was heroic in the Stars crease last night, stopping 52 of 54 St Louis shots. The Stars managed just 4 shots combined in the 2nd and 3rd periods, while Bishop was under siege all night.

The Blues now await the winner of tonight’s San Jose/Colorado Game Seven to know who they’ll be playing in the Conference Final. It’s a truly remarkable story that not just did the Blues come back from last place to be 8 wins away from the Cup, but that we could see a Stanley Cup Final where both teams were out of the playoff race on New Years Day. The hockey fan in me loves this because it’s so crazy and chaotic, but the cynic in me thinks all this does is help Gary Bettman push his notion of parity, and it allows the “just make the playoffs and anything can happen” portion of our fanbase insist that this could have been the Canucks, somehow ignoring all of the stats, fancy and otherwise that tell you the Canucks are not nearly as good as these teams are.
