2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs Conference Semifinals Open Thread- May 3/19

The Islanders could be eliminated tonight as Carolina goes in for the sweep, while St Louis and Dallas renew hostilities.

The New York Islanders could be a part of history tonight, but it’s something they don’t really want a part of. They could be the first team since the Buffalo Sabres in 1993 to sweep their First round series and then get swept in the Second round. A crazy fact about that 93 Sabres team: 6 of the 8 games they played were decided by OT, including the series winner against Boston, the infamous ‘May Day!!’ goal with the epic call from Sabres play by play legend Rick Jeanneret.

For the Isles, they have to bring it all tonight, and that means Barry Trotz is going to be desperate to find something that’s going to break through the defensive spell the Hurricanes have over his team. It could even see them make a change in goal, from Robin Lehner to Thomas Greiss. Greiss won three of the four regular season contests between these teams, and while Trotz isn’t tipping his hand, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him try and shake things up with this. They’re not ‘put Luca Sbisa in the lineup’ desperate, but it’s pretty dire for the Isles.

For the Hurricanes, they need to stay the course. Yes, they’re getting the bounces that the Islanders aren’t, but they cannot let their foot off the gas for a moment. Coming back from 3-0 is extremely hard, but not impossible. They’d do well to not even make it an option.

ST LOUIS BLUES VS DALLAS STARS- 9:30PM EDT/6:30PM PDT- (Series tied 2-2)

After splitting the first two at home, then doing the same in Dallas, the Blues are back home coming off a loss Tuesday in the Lone Star State, where tempers kicked up a notch in a series that seems ready to explode. It’s got a real old school feel to it, and it definitely could have boiled over when Jordan Binnington hacked at Ben Bishop on his way off the ice after the 2nd period of that game. How the teams react around the goaltenders (especially in the blue paint) will have an effect on this getting a little nuts. Dallas shook things up for Game 4, swapping out Tyler Seguin and Roope Hintz. Seguin had a great night with Mats Zuccarello and Jason Dickinson, while Hintz fit right in with Alexander Radulov and Jamie Benn.

St Louis is taking out Robert Bortuzzo and replacing him with Joel Edmondsson, which is probably a good idea, as Bortuzzo’s not exactly a Norris candidate back there. Will the Blues try and go to war tonight, or will they try and maintain some composure and not risk the Dallas PP making them pay for it? Should be a heck of a game, as the previous 4 have shown.

Straight outta Gothenburg, yo. AT THE GATES with the title track from their genre-shaking album ‘Slaughter Of The Soul’.
