As if this Monday wasn’t action-packed enough. First, the NMtelligentsia were gobsmacked in the gobs when GMJB ignored the NM no-trade clause. The foundationals were shaken, not stirred. And then, the least important part of TDL went into action. A hockey game.
Busy day for lawyers, player agents, hockey analysts and pool gazers. The shock trade of the day was our little Dahlen, who was reportedly fed up with life in upstate NY. Understandable. He asked to be traded. And was.
The other shock move today was Guddy going to the former steel town to steel the D behind Sid the Kid. In exchange the Nucks received former Nucks-killer, Tanner Pearson. JB’s trade received an 80% approval from the internet’s finest scientific polling facility - the NM fan poll.
What does this mean? It means a huge shakeup in the D-line for this game. Schenn slotted in to seek revenge on his former fowl employers.
Schenn looked good. Played simple D. Cleared pucks as expected, finished his checks and didn’t play bobble bobble bobbly boo behind the Nucks net. The 4 Bobble play as played by our former Gud-ness, was great for game thread libation suppliers and GA stats. It did not instil fan confidence - hence the need for distilled nerve agents.
Also, this little bit of foreshadowing is interesting too. The Nucks didn’t allow a single Goal Against! Not one. Or two. Or any!
How did this happen, when the highest paid gritty D-man was traded away and the top D pair are still serving their Faery overlords?
Let’s find out.
Early in period, the Ducks were outshooting the Nucks 2 to 1. However, it was the typical road team bluff.
And Petey called it. Around 8 minutes in and the lame Ducks shoot for the net and get nothing but Sneaky Pete pads. Pete skates up ice with Goldy on the rush.
In what has become just another routine mind-numbing pass past 2 defenders, Pete lifts the puck cross ice to Goldy who shoots post, crossbar. And in. The ‘and in’ ping is the sweetest ping we haven’t heard in a long time.
There it is. The end of the goal drought. For the Nucks and Goldy. Woooo!
Also it means the home team is leading in the first. That’s enough for the TDL-limited game thread.
But not enough for Bulldog.
While the Ducks were still outshooting the Nucks, by almost 3 to 1, the Nucks new offensive D-juggernaut, Poolie and Biega went to work.
Spooner scoops a pass to Poolie and the puckhound of Utica put a perfect shot on Boyle that most goalies can stop perfectly. Not this seeing-eye-dog tho. Wooof!
The game thread was stunned. No really. No comments were posted in the thread until the 3rd period. Some say it was because most NM game threaders comment in cramped internet bunkers and banged their heads when jumping up a full foot, hitting the celebration ceiling.
Whatever. It’s celly time in the ROG. 2-0 lead in the first against the fowls of SoCal is sweeter than duck soup on a Monday.
The final shot count was 14-6 for Anaheim. We don’t care. We only care about goals. Sure, last game were cared deeply about shots, but that’s so last Saturday.
Also of interest to powerful statisticians across the academic abacus movement, was the change to the Nucks powerplay. The first unit, and I’m not making it up, looked dangerous. No, not for Marky.
And that’s another foreshadow for those looking to skip the boring parts of this recap.
Let’s skip the boring parts and skate hard to the miraculous part.
A Nucks POWER PLAY GOAL!
The new, dangerous looking first unit was moving, out working and getting the dirty work done with a Bo-rrific effort.
Fighting for puck supremacy along the boards, Brock backhands a pass to Bo for the goal line goal! Woooo!
2nd point for Pete on the night, so his streak is back in play.
Even better, Bo’s off his schneid streak for real.
The Nucks carried the play through most of the period, outshooting the Ducks 10-8. And even better the 3-0 lead out of the 2nd.
This is highlight reel night in the ROG. I can feel it.
The freshly confident Nucks play hard in the period, not just to keep the lead, but extend it.
This next goal is setup by Bo - sprawling on the ice, a move seldom seen in curling, to keep the puck in the zone. Oh and Bo also scores the goal. Leivo with the assist. Woooooo!
It’s 4-0 for the Canucks!
The game thread or at least the game threaders having been revived by secret internet insiders, are throwing small stuffed, but probably legal things around the thread.
It’s the perfect symmetric payback game from that crushing 4-0 shutout loss last Saturday.
Or is it?
In the last minute, Bo takes a penalty. He didn’t want to take it. But the refs gave it.
The ROG, the game thread, the anti-jinxers were holding the breath, if not their liquor.
Could the Nucks preserve the shutout? Not just for Marky, but because the Nucks are the last team in the league to record a shutout this season. While being on the zilch end for 8. Not a happy stat.
The long, long final seconds ticked, the invincible Nucks PK tocked.
Shoutout for the Shutout!
Woooooo! We Win! Terrible 3 game losing streak busted.
Let’s thank the Nucks and the 2 Johns for that.
So many great things about this win.
1) It’s a WIN! (A win we should have had against the low-to-no scoring Ducks (-56 DIF) on the last SoCal trip)
2) It’s a SHUTOUT WIN! (Those count for more points in the NM accounting of point tallies. Unless it’s a shutout loss, then no points are counted, only miseries.)
3) The Loss Streak is Stopped at 3! (No matter the minimal impact in the turtle tourney, winning at least 1 in 4 games is half way to 500).
Perfect PK. Half perfect PP. That’s 75% of perfection right there, 92% of the time.
Good to not see a single Nucks D in the minus section of the +/- stat column. When has that happened this year? When Poolie has an assist and Bulldog a goal, you know it says ‘well played game of dreams’.

Redemption for Marky! 1.00 SV% - it doesn’t get any better. 1st star of the game. 1st shut out of the season and 23rd win this year. He kept the Nucks in the no-fault zone early in the 1st and the 2nd. And, yes the 3rd. He and the open-net-missing Fowl shooters. It’s ok, Ducklings, we too know what no puck luck is like.
The team’s first shutout of the year with a new look D-corp is a very good look.
Different looks? Smiling Bo is a great look.
Let’s hear from our 1st Star and new shutout fashion maven.
Over in the Green Room, the mood is so good, even Goldy jibes are permitted.
What a day. What a game. What a relief.
Let’s take the rest of this long Monday off. Even if it takes most of Tuesday to do it.
On the short road to more winning Wednesday. Another mile high win would boost NM spirits and make the turtle derby more exciting. But, mainly it would boost NM spirits, probably way over 40 proof.
Let Tuesday take care of itself and get ready for woo-woo winning Wednesday!
