Going to just start calm and collected...
The 8-6 loss was the Pitts. Trav said it would sting. Some said it might take a week to de-sting. Since the Nucks were coming back from the east, could do it in a NY week.
Apparently Travis had the kids (young and old) practice good D habits, for the D and as a 5 man unit. And had them brush their teeth after every meal.
Personal hygiene and good D habits win games.
Let’s see how.
The Nucks come out as hard on the puck as the orange is on the eyes of the NM game thread.
They draw the 1st penalty and
Pete, Brock and Millise Graovac, Pearson and Gaud go to work. 2nd unit nets the 1st goal of the game.
Nobody expected that. Or saw it. Graovac’s wicked shot went in and out the net so fast, even the sharp wits on HNIC couldn’t call it.
We’re winnning! Just 3 minutes in.
But are we winning enough? Is this a trick question?
Sure, the Nucks PP is playing 100% which is as close to perfect as can be. Until Westy notes that perfect is an imperfect standard.
Doesn’t matter. What matters is the Nucks PK stop the Mc-D/Dry powered PP. And even better, Pearson gets a shortie. Some wearing glaring orange will say it was a lucky deflection off Smith’s pads. Pearson makes his own luck.
2-nothing lead, the safest lead in hockey? In a 1 goal lead definition of safe.
It’s the Oil, so the league’s best offensive player must score. It’s like a rule, but more of a strict quota thing. Not a pretty high speed gap-defying goal, not worth watching.
Canucks dominate the Oil on the shot clock, 17-7. And kept McD off the scoreboard. The hattie board.
The Nucks carry the massive one goal lead into the 2nd.
And carried it for a full 5 minutes. Until Millsie loses the puck at the Oil blueline to... yeah... #97. And worse, he speeds away with an orange-jerseyed Kassquatch. Who scores on our one-goal-leading heroes.
Ugh. It’s a tie game. In the orange ROG. Are we having ‘burgh flashbacks?
No. It’s only the 2nd period.
And these Canucks are not the Pityburgh Nucks.
Nope. These are the hard-working, puck-grinding, tie-breaking Canucks of October.
Bo begins a bull run - Pearson carries his puck into the O-zone and the play looks broken. Only to the Oil D. Tanner “4 Points” Pearson is intent on fixing what was broken - live NHL repairman-style.
Gritty goal. We like those. In fact, we like all the Nucks goals - if the number of Nucks goals is greater than the other team after all goal-getting is over.
But, it’s not over yet for the Nucks.
Travis was road line-swatching. You may not believe who was on Bo’s wing. Or what LittleThing happened. It’s a miracle! A $6M miracle! Loui gets his first goal, his first point of the season. Tippet, like the game-thread, can’t believe it either. Wow!
Also wowed by the pass from Quinn that made the play possible. Kid leads the Canucks with 3rd assists.
Picking up an assist in a win vs EDM tonight to continue his remarkably poised career start, @Canucks blueline rookie Quinn Hughes now has 25 points in 31 career NHL (regular season) games. Only 7 on this list have done it faster pic.twitter.com/tGscPlNtZs— StatsCentre (@StatsCentre) December 1, 2019
The 2 goal lead is restored! As is Loui’s career. It’s Xmas in November!
The Oil outshoot the Nucks 15-13 in the period, thanks to their scoreless power-play. Yes, the Nucks PK is still perfect.
Now it gets interesting. The Nucks have been the better team for 40 minutes. But for third periods, the Nucks could be one of the top road teams in the world. Or at least the continent.
As ever, the game thread is offering live game strategy advise.
Ok - Now maybe don’t take the foot off the gas this time. - Twitchy
And they don’t. The Nucks Eddie-less D play as well or better in this period. Quinn is playing amazing in his own zone.
Do we dare to dream?
Leave it to Leivo. Wraps around Smith after Jake beats the Oil D to the puck on the shoot-in. Bo takes a shot - wide and pulls Smith out of position. Great pressure goal.
Speaking of pressure...
It’s 5-3 Canucks. And you know what that means.
We’re in big trouble… 3 goal lead. - Twitchy
Not tonight tho. The Canucks game strategy extends to the entire 3rd period. Cloggin up the neutral zone like a fine Stars tribute band.
Not only do they not allow the Oil to score another goal, thanks to the team D and Marky, the Nucks don’t go run ‘n gun either.
They played a hard-checking, tight period. For the whole period.
The shot clock is tied at 8-8, but the scoreboard isn’t. Which means a....
The game thread is pumped - long after the game is over.
Always good to beat the Oilers
both of them - radivel
This road trip through hell ends with 500 record. Playing against the east and the faeries, this is a pretty good result.
It’s Saturday. It’s HNIC highlights... deal with it.

Let’s hear from the game’s first 4-pointed star.
And let’s hear from the guy NM never thought we’d hear from in any post-game scrum.
“It’s big. Last game we weren’t happy with the result, this was our best 60 minute effort, and for it to be at the end of the road trip is good. Everyone chipped in and that’s what needs to happen for us to be successful.” - @j_markstrom— Vancouver #Canucks (@Canucks) December 1, 2019
Over in the orange Green room, Travis was heard to say:
Hell of a game - All 4 lines played well. Eddie doubtful for tomorrow.
Benn had the best quote of the night about self restraint and discipline:
“You want to be aggressive, but at the same time you’ve got to be thinking about where you are on the ice. You can’t be too horny out there.”
True enough... but let’s hope the Nucks are hot ‘n horny for a 2 game sweep of tOil.
November is over. We survived. So did the Nucks. Win. Win.
December starts right away tho. At home. Facing the freshly defeated terrible two-some. And the other Oilings.
Our revelry will be short. But not the win streak, k?
