RECAP: NUCKS WIN 5-1 (pretty much) Also... Lose 6-5 to Caps in ShootOut

New, comments

Silver Lining - there’s one point in there somewhere

NHL: Washington Capitals at Vancouver Canucks
No Call on Trip on Myers - Plus 3 Other Missed Calls - Yay Blind Refs!
Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

We were all looking forward to our undefeated Nucks Home Team playing at home tonight. We weren’t looking for a huge win over the Caps, until it seemed totally possible. For 38 minutes it seemed the Nucks could beat anyone.

Thing is, the league demands every game be played to the full 60 minutes. It’s not fair, especially when the game is obviously won in the 2nd. Comebacks in the 3rd are only useful when it’s the Nucks doing the coming back. Cue Detroit game tape.

It was a sold out crowd on Diwali Night in the ROG. Let’s go there now, for then.

1st Period

Typical 1st home game after long road trip start. Nucks get hemmed in their own end and the Caps put a puck in the home net. Nice start.

The good thing is that it is the last goal the Caps will score. Until much later, when all the good things end.

But first, let’s enjoy Quinn on the 1st PP unit. And Brock launching a Brocket top shelf.

Wooooooooo!

With the Nucks PP showing off, isn’t it time for the Nucks PK to show off a little? Sure.

Who wants a shortie? Schaller the sniper? Why not.

Schaller get the Nucks out front - lead the Caps 2-1 and never give up the lead. In this period.

Nucks outshoot the former Cup champs 12-10.

2nd Period

The Caps hold the league lead for scoring the most goals in the 2nd period. Not tonight. How many goals did Ovi or Carlson score this period? None. Ha-Ha! Myers was keeping Ovi off his game.

And early in the 2nd, here is the 2nd Nucks GWG - from Pete. Just as I predicted.

Woooo! That’s the Pete we know and love. Not over-thinking just nailing it.

Freshly minted 4th line sniper, Tim Schaller wants in on the eye-hand wizardry too.

Wow! 2 goals in one game. Schaller had 3 goals all last season. He’s definitely on Westy’s Xmas Hot Toddie list for most improved player. If he can sustain this elite level of Schallerness through the season, look out post season.

Also... look out if Virt keeps up the pace as one of Bo’s wingers.

Your Vancouver Canucks have put the Metrospoilotin leaders on the ropes.

Nucks will win 5-1. It’s inevitable. We know that. The ROG knows that. Even the ‘show-me’ game thread knows that.

The Nucks know that too. So... because the game is won and it’s a fun night to whomp the Caps 5-1, the Nucks let off a little in the final couple minutes of the game-is-already-won period.

Man The Canucks seemed to have stopped skating there for a couple minutes…

Twitchy2010

And then in the last seconds of the second, let Kuznetsov get the time and space to beat Marky. Probably shook up Marky a bit.

The game thread handled it well.

That goal with .3 seconds left absolutely sucks and Green should yell about that

- Westy

It’s like the team Just stopped playing with 2 minutes left. Not cool.

Twitchy2010

Oh well. Lucky pucky luck for the Caps. They can’t comeback down 5-2. This isn’t Detroit. And the Nucks aren’t the Wings.

3rd Period

Due to technical difficulties beyond our control, the Nucks PP giving up a shortie (because blown call and hideous puck watching by the Nucks PP 1st unit crew) and the Caps getting 3 goals on 6 shots - this period is unable to be recaptured at this time.

NHL hockey isn’t fair. While the Nucks had some glorious chances to win the game in reg, the refs helped that not happen. Hughes was hauled down. No call. Caps dodged a Too Many Men penalty. Twice.

Oh well. No excuses for allowing the Caps to comeback to score 4 unanswered goals.

The good news is that the Nucks didn’t allow Ovi to score. And even better, they broke Carlson’s point streak. Ha-Ha!

Meanwhile... it’s a 5-5 tie after 3 periods. One that really shouldn’t even count. Doesn’t the personal happiness of NucksNation mean anything in this money-grubbing league?

OT

Some good rushes both ways, but OT redemption for blowing a huge lead will have to wait for another unfortunate game where a huge lead is blown.

SO

The SO was won by Pete. And lost by Marky. Did you know Oshie is the most successful SO player in the league? If only the Nucks did - might have chosen to win the game in OT 3rd 2nd period.

The juicy vid recap...enjoy the initial part. Look away for the rest.

Hughes was on the ice for 4 Caps goals. Ouch! Marky was on the ice for all 5 6 Caps goals. Bigger Ouch! Sometimes it really sucks to have an off night (.828 SV%) as a goalie. A couple bad goals will do that.

“I let in 3 bad goals - I gotta play better.” - Marky

It’s ok, Marky saved the games in Detroit and NY. Let’s focus on those wins. Not this loss.

Anyhow, it’s not a real loss loss. Sure, might have missed one point, but gave 2 points to an Eastern team. Only half a loss. So, there’s that.

Let’s clearly hear from our Capt’n Bo.

Freshly returning to the Green Room in the ROG, Travis faces the music of Vancouver media.

It was a great game that ended poorly. The unblemished home win streak is fully blemished. However, a new streak could start on Monday in the ROG.

The Nucks face another team that will be gassed at the end of their B-2-B. Fortunately, those SoFlo cats aren’t the Caps, so there’s that. Will that be enough? Will the Nucks bounce-back and play to win for more than 38 minutes?

I can’t say. Only you can.
