Pre-game many were sceptical the Nucks could tie last year’s longest win streak. I might have been one of them. Nucks lose their hot-handed goalie to family matters, our hockey Gaud to the pressbox and it’s a Monday Tuesday. Or the day after Thanksgiving.
Perhaps the Nucks were a little sluggish out of the gate. I sure was. But there’s only so much blame you can put on pumpkin pie with whipped cream. That’s what 2nd and 3rd helpings are for.
1st Period
It’s 30 seconds into Demko’s first game and with the Nucks bottled up in their own zone, Larkin dangles in and the Wings think they have the lead.
Not a great start for Demko... but it’s not a softie. Just a dirty deke by Larkin. Anyhow, it doesn’t matter. Or even Mantha.
Because... the Wings won’t get another one past Demko. We didn’t know that yet.
But Atty did.
Truth to be told
when the Wings scored 5 seconds into the game, I said to myself “we got them right where we want them – to believe that they are better than us”. I’m serious.
The Canucks never looked back after that mistake.

To be fair, which is not easy at NM, the Wings possibly out-played the Nucks through most of the first. Possibly.
But, it was Richmond’s defensive sniper and soon-to-be bad boy agitator who shot off the Wings wispy feathered 1st intermission hopes.
It’s a 1-1 tie and the Nucks are flying. Outshooting Detroit 14-8.
2nd Period
The 2nd - where the magic happened in the 1st home game. And where a little nostalgic magic ruffles some Wings. On the powerplay!
I’m not making it up! While we’ve lamented the Nucks 1-14 PP thus far, this game was all about precision power execution. Thanks to Sniper Eddie’s snipey shot.
Canucks lead 2-1. All the goals from the D. Pete and Brock with the apples.
If you had Eddie with the GWG in the SPW, I want the number of your 800-psychic.
But wait. There’s more.
No, not pumpkin pie & whipped cream. Sorry.
More goals. From Dekey Pete. Letting the D know, that forwards can score too.
Sweet entry deke, sweet hands to take the 3-1 lead. Sweet Pete is back.
And so is the sweet power play. This time Eddie’s shot is tipped by JT Miller.
2 PP Goals in 1 period! How’s that possible? Coach Green has some ideas, but Wings defender Green was in the box for both tallies. A coincidence? You decide.
Ferland who was still 2nd guessing himself broke a taboo - slashed Bulldog. At the time I was very upset. An unnecessary penalty against one our fav Canucks Wings. Oh well, I’ll catch up to the waiver wire stuff later.
The Nucks outshot the Wings 10-9. And have a commanding 4-1 lead going in to the third.
3rd Period
Commanding leads are so much better than the uncommanded ones.
While the Wings were pressing for a goal or something, the Nucks PK was waiting to upstage the Nucks PP. An inner team special teams battle. Is that a thing now?
It was. Beagle was showing off killing a Miller hooking penalty by taking 3 Wings into the boards - in the Wings end. Great show while it lasted. Beagle then was called for tripping when he whipped his stick around to ground a Wings winger.
The timing wasn’t great. It was perfect. One minute and thirty-eight seconds of 3-on-5 perfection. Bunch of showoffs. A small bunch.
Demko was tested. Tanev was blocking shots - not with his face. And Sutter was clearing pucks and getting tripped. And going after Mantha. While Erne was wrestling Myers to the ice, but Myers put big Erne down with a big right. So much rough housing so early in the season.
Getting chippy? The Schaller knows.

Chippy enough for Capt’n Bo to draw a penalty and let the Nucks PP unit get back to pursuing their own brand of perfection.
Wow! Great tip. Eddie is putting up the numbers on the 1st unit.
5-1 lead for the Nucks. Game is out of the Wings claws or sticks. So... they start messing around. With the wrong Canuck.
Big Erne takes down Stetch. Our bad boy from Richmond roughs up Erne with bad words and a sneaky right.
And Stetch not only gets 2 for roughing, but a Misconduct Penalty!
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/19291797/NM_stetch_misconduct.jpg)
While Miller is voted the 1st star of the game by the 2 Johns, Schaller by Westy, Stetch wins the Nucks Fan vote.
After our big small ‘enforcer’ is tossed and Detroit’s big big enforcer is tossed, the game settles down to enjoy the roars of joy in the ROG.
Nucks WIN 5-1!
Wooooooooo!
Let’s watch the 2 Johns narrate this historic 3rd straight home game win.

Nucks outshoot Wings 32-27. Demko stops all but 1 shot. Brock, Pete and Eddie have a 3 point game. Miller pots 2 goals. The Mottely crew of the 4th made life miserable for the Wings top line.
Once the rust was dusted, Demko got his groove on - and 1st win in his 1st game of the year.

The Game’s 1st Star, (not Westy’s tho - that was Schaller), talks about frustrating visitors in the ROG. Not just at the concessions.

A perfect home win streak is complete. Let’s savour this win for a couple days. Before the road Blues drag us down on Thursday - right at dinner time.
It’s a big road game in St Lois. The first road game of the season. What? What about the hAlberta twosome? That was a very late pre-season accident of scheduling. Doesn’t count. In the NM Book of Road Hockey.
Thursday Demko is back in net. And possibly Saturday afternoon in Jersey for the Hughes brothers showdown. And we want to be Quinning all weekend.
