With Ben Scrivens out, it falls on the shoulders of Kevin Poulin to lead the nation for another shot at gold

There were many who didn’t give this group of castoffs and afterthoughts a chance, but with a win today they will be one step away from being able to bring home Canada’s 3rd straight gold medal in Men’s Hockey.

One thing they weren’t counting on was Ben Scrivens going down to injury in the Quarter Final match, and it will be up to former New York Islanders G Kevin Poulin to keep this surprising German team from pulling off another upset.

One of the neat things about this tournament has been the new drinking game “Spot The Former Canuck” and today we get to add one more name to that, as Christian “Blasthoff” Ehrhoff takes to the ice for Germany. Ehrhoff is probably the most well-seasoned ex-NHLer, along with Marcel Goc for the Germans. They also have 2 Canadians in their lineup: Daryl Boyle (Sparwood, BC) and Brooks Macek (Winnipeg, MB).

Germany won just once in the prelims, an OT victory over Norway, but proceeded to knock off Switzerland and one of the gold medal favorites, Sweden to get to the semis for the first time since East and West Germany reunited.

The winner of this match will await the other heavy favorite for Gold: The O.A.R. A possible rematch against the Czechs should Canada win today is gone as the Russians defeated the Czechs 3-0. No looking ahead though. Don’t take anything for granted today. Beat the Germans then worry about the next game. Go Canada Go.
