THE ROUNDUP- Oct 5/18: Basking In The Afterglow, Penguins Top Caps In OT

New, comments

The Capitals are scoring a lot of goals, Philly beats the house in Vegas and Dahlin’s 1st game is not so good for Buffalo.

CANUCKS NEWS: Still basking in the afterglow of that opening night win over Calgary? Hold onto that, because with the Canucks heading out on a 6 game road swing, you might want to revisit that during this stretch. After Saturday and a rematch with the Flames they’re off to Carolina, followed by Tampa, a visit with our old pal Roberto Luongo next Saturday in Florida, then Pittsurgh and Winnipeg before facing Boston at home on the 20th. Here’s some reading for you to get you through Friday:

Patrick Johnson looks at where Elias Pettersson’s goal ranks in terms of Canucks debuts... JPat goes over an opening night win that shows promise, and looks at what should be tough sledding on this road swing... Always love the mic’d up features, and here’s one from the opening night for all you Brandon Sutter stans...

And the Patcast is back, this time JPat & Botch talk about the excitement that Pettersson’s arrival is generating in the room and lots more...

AROUND THE LEAGUE: Though I am sure that there’s someone out there with the take that they lost because Tom Wilson wasn’t in the lineup, the highly anticipated first game between the Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t lack for excitement or goals. The Caps are currently on pace to score 533 goals this season. Yeah, that’s kinda crazy, and obviously they’re not gonna pot a half dozen or more a night, but even with an OT loss to the Penguins you have to think they’re pleased with the way they’ve started the season. Kris Letang had a 3 point night with 2 goals including the OT winner, and also got a goal and 2 assists from Evgeni Malkin, while TJ Oshie had 2 and a helper for the Caps in the loss... The Bruins rebounded from that embarrassing opening night butt-kicking as they shutout the Sabres in Buffalo. Scummy Brad Marchand assisted on all 4 Boston goals as they spoiled the NHL debut of 1st round pick Rasmus Dahlin. And because he went pointless I am confident we can say that Elias Pettersson is better, right? Jaroslav Halak got the SO for the Bruins... Josh Bailey’s OT goal on the PP gave the Islanders a 2-1 win in Carolina. Mathew Barzal set him up on that one... The Nashville Predators beat the New York Rangers 3-2 with a GWG from Colton Sissons... Craig Anderson battled hard but after blowing a 3rd period lead, Patrick Kane sealed a Chicago win in OT as the Sens dropped their opener at home... Joonas Korpisalo stopped 18 of 20 Detroit shots and Artemi Panarin got the OT winner as Columbus beat the Red Wings 3-2... The Jets scored 4 in the 3rd period as they picked up where they left off last season en route to a 5-1 win over St Louis. Public Enemy #1 (to Canucks fans who can’t take a joke) Patrik Laine got his first of the season in that one... Ben Bishop stopped all 30 shots he faced as Dallas started their season with a 3-2 shutout win over the Arizona Coyotes... Colorado scored 4 unanswered goals as they won their opener 4-1 over Minnesota in Denver last night. Mikko Rantanen had a goal and an assist for the Avs... And the Flyers got 2 goals from Wayne Simmonds and a goal and assist from Robert Hagg as they crashed the season opening party in Vegas with a 5-2 win. Just 2 games tonight, as Columbus is at home to Carolina and Los Angeles opens their season hosting the San Jose Sharks.
