Elias Petterson is the Canuck pick at 5! What do we think?

By the Numbers:

Born: November 12, 1998, Sundsvall, SWE

Position: C/LW

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 165 lbs.

Hand: Left

Notable Rankings:

NHL Central Scouting (EU): 2nd 5th

Bob McKenzie (TSN): 7th

What We Like:

Pettersson is an all-around forward, with a high hockey IQ. He will be a solid playmaker who can be counted on in all situations when he physically matures.

One great thing to keep in mind is that Pettersson and Jonathan Dahlen have a great friendship, and this move will definitely help develop some immediate chemistry for a potential line in training camp and hopefully beyond!

He plays a bit bigger than his 165 pound frame which will affirm the statement made above. He’s also got some real penalty drawing skills, which is never a bad thing

What Concerns Us

Obviously, I’ve mentioned previously that he’s slight... If you watched him walk to the stage you quickly realize that he has a lot of room to grow into his 6’2” frame! That frame is reminiscent of the Sedins at that age, so have some faith that he will get bigger in due time!

What’s Next?

Pettersson will be playing for Växjö Lakers HC of the SHL next season and will likely be making the jump to North America in 2018-19 at the earliest.

How do you feel about Vancouver’s first pick in this year’s draft?
