The Utica Comets will open the AHL season this weekend, but before they do, there’s still some fine tuning to be done. It started with the release of 4 players on tryouts: Tyler Biggs, Joel Martin, Lane Scheidl and Aaron Irving. They then welcomed back Richard Bachman, Anton Rodin, Michael Chaput and Jayson Megna.
Megna of course was a lightning rod for criticism last year as Willie Desjardins persistently gave Megna prime minutes and got literally nothing in return for it. Megna’s demotion to the Comets is a great thing for the AHL squad. He will be looked to for leadership and offence, and it allows the Canucks to give players like Jake Virtanen and maybe even last year’s scoring leader for the Comets Darren Archibald, a chance to show the parent club what they have.
The Comets played a pair of games this weekend against the Syracuse Crunch, and after dropping the opener 3-2 in Rome, NY rebounded to take a 3-1 win in Syracuse. Saturday night saw the Comets get goals from Nikolay Goldobin and Cameron Darcy.
On Sunday, the Comets got tallies from Alexis D’Aoust, Michael Carcone and the insurance goal into an empty net from Anton Cederholm.
The Comets will open the season with a pair of games Saturday and Sunday against the Toronto Marlies. Both games go at 4pm Eastern, and we will have game threads and radio streaming info for those of you who wish to follow along.
