The Blue Jackets didn't qualify Chaput, a 3rd round pick (89th overall) by the Flyers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He was eventually got moved to Columbus in exchange for old pal Tom Sestito. He was given a "put up or shut up" deal with the Jackets last summer but that didn't pan out, instead playing 63 games with the Lake Eerie Monsters (AHL), going 16-29-45 and playing a key role in their Calder Cup run.

He's a depth signing and injury insurance (because of course). Perhaps he can't stand out in camp, but more than likely this is for Utica.
