Canucks Trade McCann for Gudbranson

Gudbranson is good. right ? Also, we do a lot of trades with Florida, eh?

James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

Let the debate begin.  Did the Canucks just get a top pairing defenseman, or did they just trade away Ryan Kesler redux?

Probably a bit of both.  You have to give to get, and the Canucks also gave up a 2nd and a 4th in this years' draft, while getting a 5th back.  So, there will be questions as we digest this trade and rush to declare "who won the deal"?

So have at it.  Details in story here.....

Zanstorm Inputs

6'5" 216 pounds

Born: January 7, 1992 in Ottawa Ontario

Drafted: 3rd overall by the Panthers in 2010.

Career Stats:

Elite Prospects says:

A large defenseman with good leadership skills. Has a great shot. Gives a good opening pass and works hard in all three zones. A good skater considering his size. Could improve his physicality. - See more at:

If you wanted an offensive defenceman we would have had to give up a hell of a lot more.

The Panthers recently signed Gudbranson to a 1 year, $3.5 million deal to avoid him going to salary arbitration as a free agent. At the time, then GM Dale Tallon said:

"He is an important part of our young core who has continued to develop into a reliable, physical presence on our blue line and a strong leader in our locker room."

Maybe he can put up more points in a different role with the Canucks. Or maybe not. He may just be the new Dan Hamhuis for this club.

-The Big G averaged 20:06 icetime last season, the 4th-most on the the Panthers team.

-Was barely used on the power play.

-Was used primarily while shorthanded (tied with Willie Mitchell for most SH time on ice on the team)

-Third on the Panthers team with 150 hits last season.

-4th on the team with blocked shots

-4th on the team with average penalty minutes per game.

His first NHL goal:

Not gonna be an offensive dynamo but he will be that big minute-logging defensive defeneman who will be a big physical presence. Glad to see that Benning realizes that the Canucks were too small and gutless. Took him 2 years.
