LAST NIGHT'S GAME:
- TJ Oshie had a hat trick, including the OT winner as the Washington Capitals took Game 1 of their Eastern Conference series against the Pittsburgh Penguins last night. The Caps led after one period on a goal by Andre Burakovsky, but found themselves down by one in the 2nd when Ben Lovejoy and Evgeni Malkin countered for the Pens. Shortly after that, Oshie got his first, an unassisted marker to leave it tied at 2 after 2. Alex Ovechkin would set up Oshie's 2nd to restore the Caps' lead early in the 3rd, but Nick Bonino (shush...) would tie it again before Oshie's 3rd (and 2nd unassisted) midway through the OT. The goal wasn't without controversy though, as it went through a lengthy review process before finding a view that confirmed the original call.
- After knocking the defending champs out, the St Louis Blues will head to Dallas as former Stars coach Ken Hitchcock takes on his old frenemy Lindy Ruff and the Stars. The two teams last met in 2001, a 4-0 series sweep for the Blues, and while they might be hard pressed to repeat that feat, St Louis is a good bet to continue towards their first ever Stanley Cup. The Blues are healthy, while Dallas will be without Tyler Seguin for at least the first two games of this series. Other than that, the Stars are ready, and this series will come down to which team's goaltender can stop the others' high powered offence.
- The other Western series gets underway in the late game tonight as the San Jose Sharks play their 1st game in a week, hosting the Nashville Predators, who just drove up from Orange County after defeating the Ducks in Game 7. Unlike the series against LA, Nashville's a team that can go toe to toe with the Sharks in the speed department, and this will be another fun one to watch as the Sharks look to continue their quest.
