Torts is baaaack

NHL: Columbus Blue Jackets at Calgary Flames Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

Who would have thought that the second round pick we are going to receive might end up being insufficient compensation for a potential Jack Adams winning coach?!?! That’s kinda how it looks today. The Jackets have been gangbusters this year, and Torts has led the charge!

The return to form of Sergei Bobrovsky, along with a great young defensive core has resulted in a record of 19-5-4. Add to that a core of solid, hardworking forwards who aren’t ‘elite’, and you have one heck of a system driven team!

Fun Facts about the Blue Jackets Franchise

In the 2000 expansion draft, the Blue Jackets selected a goaltender with their first pick. Given the importance of the position, it makes sense... using that pick on Rick Tabaracci, not so much. Ultimately, it was UFA signing Ron Tugnutt who ended up being the starter for the Jackets in their inaugural season.

The team name ‘Blue Jackets’ is a celebration of the Civil War history of the area, with several prominent military figures coming from Ohio. To entrench this ideal, Nationwide Arena has a Napoleonic Cannon that ‘fires’ after each Blue Jacket goal.

Even though it’s a newer franchise, the team has had a decent presence at the NHL awards. Their players have received some major hardware including a Maurice Richard trophy, a Vezina, and a Calder trophy. There may be more awards being put on the shelves if the season continues to play out as it has thru the first 30 games.

Trivia question of the day: Which player won a Calder trophy for the Blue Jackets?
