When the All-Star Game rules were changed, and Las Vegas prepared for its big announcement...

NHL: Ottawa Senators at Vancouver Canucks Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

Today is migraine day for the Captain, so I’m going to head straight into the links to preserve what is left of my sanity:

—————

  • The main news in Vancouver: the Canucks have called up Joe LaBate. I cannot wait to see him charging around the ice, he’s Raffi Torres before the crazy kicked in. [Province]
  • Brendan Gaunce. Fan? Not a fan? Canucks Army have done a piece praising his defensive abilities. For me, that’s not what I want from a 4th liner. I want average stats, but scoring contribution as well. Gaunce may have the defensive side of his game down, but he’s no Chris Kelly. He needs to find some offense in his game to stick at the NHL level. [Canucks Army]
  • The NHL has announced new rules for All-Star Game eligibility, in an attempt to crack down on John Scott-esque circus acts in future. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the whole charade, but I would prefer to see a Young Stars vs Old Stars kind of event, rather than a one-man-band event. [NHL]
  • John Scott couldn’t care less, because he’s had his moment. He can suck up to the league as much as he wants to now. [The Score]
  • We’re hours away from the Las Vegas team name and logo announcement. Here’s a preview to whet your appetite. [NY Times]
  • And another, in case you really are interested. I certainly am, as I’m the GM in a fantasy league for the expansion outfit and I don’t want to be lumbered with a rubbish name. [Las Vegas Review Journal]
  • Last night saw Ryan Ellis sucker-hit JT Brown. Brown then lands on Ellis and pounds the crap out of him, which I totally applaud:
  • Some of these I actually didn’t know: the origins of all 30 NHL team names, in anticipation of the big announcement later. [NHL]
  • Our poor old buddy Eddie Lack is having a hard time of it. Cam Ward has had a stellar month to secure the starters role, and now Eddie is on IR due to a concussion picked up in practice. Are tacos good for concussions? [Canes Country]
  • Tomas Hertl will miss a few weeks for the Sharks due to surgery. Good player. [Mercury News]
  • KEEP YOUR HEAD UP ROOK:
  • This tweet will make your eyes bleed.
  • After yet another first NHL goal this season - Jake Guentzel this time - we finally get a realistic reaction from the family:

Question of the day: What would you do with Brendan Gaunce? Keep him up or send him down?
