GameThread: Blues vs. Canucks

Battle of the UNBEATEN!

NHL: St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

The well rested St. Louis Blues bring their perfect record to Vancouver in a battle of unbeaten Western Conference rivals. I know it’s a weird statement, but it’s true... the Blues haven’t lost so far this season! All kidding aside, this will be the first opportunity for the Canucks to play against a playoff calibre team this season!

The Good Guys

There’s no shortage of news surrounding the Canucks in tonight’s matchup. The signing of UBC product Matt Hewitt to backup Jacob Markstrom is the biggest item. Miller is being held out of the lineup because of ‘tightness’, which necessitated the emergency signing of Hewitt. Obviously, Hewitt is not expected to see any action unless something really bad happens. At the very least, Hewitt will be able to tell his future offspring about how he was an NHLer... even if it was just one time!

It looks like Jake Virtanen has been grounded for his WWE style turnbuckle incident on Sunday with Joachim Nordstrom. Jack Skille is slotting into Virtanen’s place for tonight’s game on a line with Baertschi and Horvat.

In case you haven’t seen highlights of the big comeback win on Sunday night, here’s the game in 5 minutes!

The Bad Guys

This is a transitional year for the Blues roster. Gone are Captain David Backes (Broooons), Steve Ott (Red Wings), and the inseparable duo of Troy Brouwer and Brian Elliott (Flames). With the veterans departing, a bunch of younger players are being asked to take the 2015-16 Western Conference Finalists to new heights this season. Alex Pietrangelo has replaced Backes as Captain, Jake Allen has assumed the role of #1, and newly acquired Nail Yakupov is here to ‘learn how to win’.

Fun Fact: The Blues have 2 mascots, one of which is official and the other is not so much. The official mascot is a Blue Polar Bear called Louie (shocking I know). The other one is an homage to former Captain David Backes and an erroneous tweet including the hashtag #roarbacon.... There really was no other option for the name for that mascot... Piggy Smalls!

Fun Fact #2: What’s in a name? Some teams are named after ferocious animals, others warriors, and some named after acts of nature. Not the St. Louis Blues though! The team is named after a W.C. Handy song entitled Saint Louis Blues. Have a listen!

And after that happy little ditty, we open the bar! Grab a pop, some chips or whatever else you need to enjoy tonight’s battle!
