After an 0-7-0 start to this season the Columbus Blue Jackets have fired coach Todd Richards and hired former Canucks coach John Tortorella. The deal is for this season plus 2 more seasons, so, since the Canucks canned Torts so early in his contract, they will be on the hook for some of his salary.
John Tortorella's contract with CBJ is for this season and two more, same as his remaining time on VAN contract. VAN paying "some of it."— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) October 21, 2015
But who cares? That's not OUR money or cap space.
The golden nugget is that the Canucks will receive a 2nd round draft pick from Columbus as compensation for acquiring the outspoken and entertaining coach. When is this pick? Well Pierre LeBrun explains it like this:
On the 2nd-round pick going to Van for Torts, the Jackets have until June 1 to decide if it's 2016, 2017 or 2018 pick— Pierre LeBrun (@Real_ESPNLeBrun) October 21, 2015
Apparently we get a 2nd rounder instead of a 3rd round pick because Torts has been hired during the season. Cool hey? Love getting a seemingly free 2nd rounder. Assets are good, donkay.
Blue Jackets fans, if you are wondering what you are getting with your new head coach, feel free to pose questions in the comments section. We will answer all of them. Personally, I can tell you that Torts' tenure with the Canucks was mostly a calamity. There was some good, for example...we played better defensively, in my opinion. But......I can almost guarantee you that most responses will be of the negative variety. You know, because people don't like the coach trying to break into the opposing team's dressing room to (either literally or figuratively) beat the hell out of the jackass opposing coach for being a douche:
If you want a fire lit under your team's ass, Columbus....you just got it. But....it comes with some baggage, which you will or may find out down the road.
Anyway....thanks for the 2nd round pick. Hopefully you stink up the joint over the next 3 years so our pick is better.
This post has been brought to you by Torts himself! What a "musician!"
