GAME DAY: Canucks at Flames

New, comments

An interesting start to the Canucks pre-season so far, as one half of the split squad withstood an early barrage from the San Jose Sharks, getting 3 points from Linden Vey as they won 4-2 at Rogers Arena. We're still waiting for the carrier pigeon from the NHL to arrive with the score from the other game in Stockton, CA. While we do, let's talk about the next challenge for the new look Canucks, a battle against the Calgary Flames.

After a split squad split against the Sharks, the Canucks (who sent 3 players back to their junior squads including Jordan Subban, thus enabling the Vancouver Sun to have a convenient out on their ridiculous pic caption from Wednesday) are in Calgary tonight to take on the Flames.

The slogan for this new era is 'Change Is Coming', yet so far we see some familiar refrains: Dmen banged up, and goaltender controversies. The Canucks insist, for the time being anyway, that they'll be rolling 3 goalies this season, as they can't risk trying to send Jakob Markstrom down to Utica without losing him to a waiver wire claim. This of course has sent everyone into a tizzy about how things are exactly the same as before, and we all know how that ended up and omg we're gonna lose all our goalies and...

Sorry... Look, we all need to calm the hell down for a minute. It's not the same as the whole Luongo/Schneider mess. There's nothing that's happened that's caused someone to ask for a trade. There's no question about who the number one goalie is. It's 1, 2A & 2B. And Mike Gillis is not here to take a 'one or the other situation' and trade them both away. I know we're used to chaos and controversy, but bloody hell people... you gotta give change a chance to take root.

As far as DMen go,  Alex Edler got his reclamation season off to a glorious start by honouring John Tortorella's illustrious coaching stint via blocking a shot with his face. There was good news this morning though, with Ryan Stanton back on the ice. Looks like he will be in the lineup this evening, which is a good thing considering the experience level of the rest of the D they're dressing. It's way too early for the Canucks to start having the kind of injuries they had to deal with last season.

The Flames look to be sitting a lot of the guys who were part of last night's 4-3 OT win over the Winnipeg Jets in Sylvan Lake, AB in the Kraft Hockeyville game. They'll be back at it again tomorrow too, as these two teams hook up again, this time in Vancouver at Rogers Arena, which is awesome because we really aren't talking enough about empty seats and stuff, right?

So it looks like the squad that was in Stockton, for the most part will be heading over to Calgary for tonight's contest. A couple interesting notes: The lineup the Flames are icing does not include Mason Raymond, who is listed as day to day for the Flames, and it looks as though Flames 1st rounder Sam Bennett will be good to go for tonight.  This is going to be the first look at Luca Sbisa for Canucks fans, with the rest of the Canucks top 6 D either not going or out with injury. Expect him to play over 20 mins tonight and to have any errors magnified into gargantuan proportions.
