Canucks Sign 1st Rounder Jared McCann

The first rounder we got in the Kesler trade is a kid who fancies his game after Kesler. Because of course.

Vancouver Canucks General Manager, Jim Benning announced today that the club has signed centre Jared McCann.

McCann, 18, finished second on Sault Ste. Marie in goals (27) and points (62) in 64 games played during the 2013.14 season. In 2012.13, he received Ontario Hockey League All-Rookie Second Team honors after recording 44 points (21-23-44) in 64 games.

On the international stage, McCann was a member of the gold-medal winning Canada U18 Team at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

The London, Ontario native was originally selected by Vancouver 24th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Besides moving the KesLord before he threw a tantrum, this past draft and the days leading up to it were best known for bringing in a solid crop of prospects (Virtanen / McCann / Demko) along with Linden Vey.

McCann - selected thanks to moving the aforementioned Kesler - is projected as a "strong, smart two-way center with an NHL-ready shot" though there are some concerns about his upside. Perhaps we should give the kid with the laser shot some time in Utica before we kick him to the curb, but hey, that's just me. Canucks Army has a cool piece chatting about McCann with his old GM at the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhound.
