Mike Gillis and crew have gone "off the map" and signed another player from a New York university. This time it's 6'2", 220 pound left winger Mike Zalewski. The 21 year-old, according to Canucks.com:
collected 26 points (9-17-26) in 35 games with the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineers in 2013.14 to rank fourth on the team in scoring. The 6’2", 210 pound forward finished tied for first on the team in shorthanded goals with two. In 75 career NCAA games, Zalewski has compiled 47 points (21-26-47) and 75 penalty minutes.
Prior to joining RPI, the New Hartford, NY, native played two seasons with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL where he was an assistant captain and led the team in scoring in the 2011.12 season with 75 points (38-37-75) in 60 games. He collected 12 points (6-6-12) in 23 playoff games in 2010.11 to help the Vipers win the Mowat Cup and Doyle Cup and also reach the Royal Bank Cup Final.
Here are Zalewski's career stats:
From The Daily Gazette:
"It is a bittersweet time for me and my family. Being at RPI the last two years has been a terrific experience in which I have developed a great deal as a player, in particular as a 'power forward. I have my coaches and teammates to thank for helping me grow into the player I am today. I am very excited for this opportunity with such a first-class organization like Vancouver. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to play in the NHL and the Canucks are providing that chance."

The signing of Chris Tanev out of the Rochester Institute of Technology worked pretty well. Let's hope they have found another diamond in the rough here. Also keep in mind that the Canucks are thin in depth with players that are in the 21-25 year old range and expect Gillis to keep addressing that.
-More on this signing at SBN's College Hockey Blog. Looks like a bottom 6 forward projection according to them.
