Ryan Stanton was never drafted into the NHL. The Chicago Blackhawks brought him in as a free agent and signed him to a 3-year entry level contract in March of 2010. He only played on game for Chicago (and that was last season), and spent the rest of his time with their affiliate team, the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL, scoring 9 goals and 50 assists and a lot of fights and penalty minutes in 222 games over those 3 seasons. When Chicago put him on waivers late last month the Canucks claimed him. Nobody really batted and eyelash at it. Pass It To Bulis was more or less echoing the majority of the sentiment out there with this piece after waiver claim.
Yet, here he is.....sticking with the squad over Andrew Alberts and even Yannick Weber as the 6th defenceman. He has played all 8 games this season and now has an astonishing 1 goal and 3 assists. A very steady, un-flashy, under-the-radar type who has found favor with John Tortorella. I love it. It's like an Aaron Rome all over again. You need these kind of keep-it-simple defencemen on your team.
Now watch the Stanch (?) bag his first NHL goal with the NHL's team of choice:
Here are Stanton's comments post game (keeps it cool):
You're a beauty player, Ryan! Keep it up! Congrats on your first NHL goal!
