Canucks' GM Mike Gillis met with the media today to discuss the Roberto Luongo situation. He seemed quite poised and relaxed. While media and fans voice their opinions that out of courtesy to Roberto's wishes / psyche Gillis should trade him before the season starts, Mike will have none of it. He says there is plenty of interest. He says Luongo is a world class goalie and that he wants the right pieces in return that will make the Canucks better or he is not going to move the goaltender. It's not about Roberto's feelings here. Sure, Luongo said it was time to move on, but he put the pen to paper on his current deal. He is being very professional and classy in front of the media over the whole situation, and hopefully he stays that way. Roberto told the media today:

“You hear lots of stuff going around and you don’t know what’s real and what’s not. Right now, I’m just focussing on being here and being part of this group. I really don’t want to take my attention away from that because it wouldn’t be fair to the guys in this lockeroom. When we get to that (trade) bridge, we’ll cross it.

“When Mike has something to tell me, he will call me.”

And the same can be said about Cory Schneider. He is the new #1 in Vancouver but he may have to share the crease more than a usual #1 goaltender would.

Of course, there is also the issue of the condensed season, and that having 2 world class goaltenders gives the Canucks a chance to win every night, which Gillis has remained adamant about.

Gillis is stressing patience, and I believe him. Don't expect a Luongo trade over the next week. Prepare for the possibility that Luongo and Cory Schneider will split duties this season.

Would I prefer that Gillis moved Luongo ASAP and got some return to help right away? Yes. Am I in the camp that agrees that the Canucks should spend that much cap space on 2 goaltenders? Nope. But I am not the GM of the Vancouver Canucks. In Gillis I trust though.
