Your Morning Coffee- Tuesday January 18th

You had to know this was coming?  The Canucks show the first signs of being mortal, and out come the wolves.  Between 'fans' who seem to have their knives sharpened in constant wait for their particular player that is the source of their often misguided and ill-informed frustrations, to the others who not long ago were forced to admit that this team is not the same as Canucks teams of the past.  Now after 2 losses by our backup goalie what do you see?  Doubts about Roberto Luongo's play.  It's laughable now.  So go on, drink that Haterade.  There's gonna be a whole lot more reasons to hate the Canucks when they start rolling again.  More after the jump...

Yes, the Canucks have stumbled a little bit, and there are a couple injuries but let's face it: if you're gonna have guys go down to injury, these are the roster spots you want them to happen in.  So tonight we get a look at Chris Tanev as well as Sergei Shirokov, both of whom have been called up from the Manitoba Moose.  Perhaps Shirokov's presence will send a message to guys like Mason Raymond, Mikael Samuelsson and Jeff Tambellini, both of whom have been struggling.  But for all of the hand wringing and "I told you so's", the team is 2-2 on this road trip.  They've still got a damn good road record, and are playing a divisional rival which, barring 2 bad games in Minnesota has been money in the bank this season.

Just coffee today, thanks...

Hard to say what the truth is in the Sidney Crosby not appearing at the All Star Game fiasco is.  His agent denies having any type of conversation like that with him, but it sure does look more like damage control than settling the issue.  Either way, it's another hit to Sid's reputation.  Apparently scoring the 2nd biggest goal in Canadian hockey history (sorry kids, Paul Henderson's winner in Moscow was infinitely bigger) doesn't get you a free pass from criticism, deserved or not... Nicklas Lidstrom and Eric Staal were announced as the Captains for the ASG this morning by the NHL.  Good choices both, but you get the feeling there's a lot of pandering to the hometown crowd in this one, don't you?  I mean, not that Staal doesn't deserve an all star nod, but 3 2 players from the 9th place Hurricanes while some teams have no selections at all?  I mean, there's only one Philadelphia Flyer, and that's a little odd to say the least, not to mention 5 goalies from the East.  That being said, the draft is probably the only thing to look forward to in this game.  For the most part, it's all about the skills competition.  The game itself means nothing, as it always has... Not a big PK Subban fan, but why the hell should he have to apologize for scoring a big OT winner last night against the Calgary Flames?  It was a hell of a goal, and emotional no doubt after the Canadiens blew a 4 goal lead.  Another one of those rare games where both starters were pulled.  And doesn't Mikka Kiprusoff look like he is in the twilight of his career?  The sad part is that the West is so messed up this year, the 14th place Flames are only 6 points out of a playoff spot...

WAACH 'Cast's Band Of The Day- KATAKLYSM

This Quebec based band is getting ready to hit the road on a North American tour, including stops in Kelowna and Vancouver.  The perfect blend of technicality and brutal aggression, they've been a nonstop touring machine for almost 2 decades now and are showing no signs of letting up.

Check out the drummer on this one.  Insane...
