With the new season about to begin across the pond, some may miss this little bit of hilarity. If you'll permit me to give you a recap of the lawsuit:
MSG, which owns the New York Rangers, said it filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan because the NHL would begin fining the organization US$100,000 per day starting Friday if the company did not give the league complete control over the Rangers' Web site and other promotions...The lawsuit said the NHL insisted last week that MSG transfer control over the Rangers independently produced Web site, including the "nyrangers.com" address so that the league could convert it into one of 30 "cookie-cutter" club Web sites at "nhl.com."
I know it's massively easy to mock this league and I'm not a terribly large fan of the "cookie approach" to anything (though you canucks.com guys are simply rock solid individuals) and while it's completely nauseating for me to pull for the Rangers organization, I love that they held on to their Web site.
As much as I can understand the uniform web strategy of the league, I think someone needs to smack the NHL digital leader and explain that giving the teams a bit of individual freedom in their web message is fine and, actually, a welcome degree of flexibility. I would do the research to see what other sporting leagues do for their sites, but then again, I don't care. The NHL should really focus their efforts on a number of other things before they get down to the nitty gritty "we want to have more control over your DoubleClick contract" which I guess is really the thing pulling the league down. A shit TV contract, an awful public relations image, a non-existent marketing campaign and almost a silent start to their league season...does milking the Dolan brothers out of 100K a day compensate for that? Moreover, you REALLY think that Web site is worth that much on a daily basis? Did I miss their porn section or something?!
Good for the Rangers; keep up the good work. And that's the last time you'll hear me say that. I hope Gomez pulled his groin taking a shit tonight...the team should go 0-82 and Lundqvist gets pulled from every game in the first period, but I hope their Web site still continues to kick ass.
Welcome to my confusing reality.
