From the Globe and Mail: The NHL Board of Governors discussed a possibility to drop the current scheduling concept and voted on it. The results were close apparently.

Word is that it will be examined further in mid-January during the All Star Weekend in Dallas. So all hope is not lost.
The governors fell one vote short of the required two-thirds majority on a motion to drop two of the eight games against teams in the same division and add home-and-home games against teams in the opposite conference. When only 19 of the 30 governors voted in favour of the move, the NHL decided to maintain the status quo.
Dammit!
