Ken Hitchock has told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he is confident that Keith Primeau will recover from his concussions and play for the Flyers this season.
Primeau is keeping a tight lip on his status right now, not even telling Hitchcock how he feels.
Now, do you really think that GM Bobby Clarke wants Primeau to return?
Primeau is running the risk of returning with a possible chance of a recurring head injury and he is eating up $3.04 million of the Flyer's salary. The Flyers with Primeau's salary are sitting at about the $38.6 million mark, and superstar forward Simon Gagne has not even signed yet. Gagne is reporteded to be asking in the $4-5 million range. That puts the Flyers in a tough spot, and you'd have to think that Clarke is praying for Primeau to retire immediately, or die. Maybe he is using Primeau's case to convince Gagne to sign for less than he is demanding. But I'd almost guarantee that Gagne wouldn't bite on that.
If Primeau returns, we could see Gagne hold out for a while, or be traded.
That is something that I wouldn't want if I were the GM. Primeau is a risk health wise, and he could get left behind in the new speed-promoting NHL, something fellow Flyer Derian Hatcher is about to find out, in my opinion.
