...But Canucks assistant GM Lorne Henning explained that even though defencemen Keith Ballard ($4.2-million cap hit) and Lee Sweatt ($650,00 cap hit) are injured, it's possible they could both be back sooner than the 10 games/24 days minimum out of action that would be required if they were put on LTIR to remove their salaries from the books. "(Ballard) has been improving pretty well," said Hennning and Lee (Sweatt) is in the same boat."

via Jim Jamieson at The Province. FYI, Ballard has missed 3 games so far and technically, even though he would have been sent back down to Manitoba had he not been injured, Sweatt has missed 5 games. No word on Hamhuis yet who is in Vancouver resting his weary head.

"When we went out for dinner with Ryan and Henrik after the awards, we talked about our team," Gillis explained after the draft ended Saturday. "I didn't think we'd be this close for an additional year. We knew we had to accelerate our program. I would have hated to have this group of players come to training camp in September and tell them we couldn't make any key improvements." -The Vancouver Sun

I like the communication between the GM and his top guys. Four more days, folks and we'll see what Gillis adds to put the Canucks over the top.

Mike Gillis is being quite pro-active this off season.

2008 NHL Entry Draft - Day 1 Review

I'll get to what the Oilers did in a second, but first I'd like to go throught the various trades and some of my impressions from the top 10 picks. Darryl Sutter was the arguably the busiest GM on...

This Should Lower the Level of Discourse a Little Bit

The U.S. played Slovenia in the World Championships yesterday. It was a ho-hum 5-1 victory for the Americans (Brown and O'Sullivan with assists, Kopitar with a goal), but the incident I'd like to...

Buffalo Sabres draft flashback

On the eve of game one of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins, in my rage of jealousy, I thought I would do some draft flashbacks.  I'm obviously not in a...
