Gillis on UFA Doan: "We've been in constant contact. He's clearly a player we'd like to have in Vancouver and we're going to wait it out."

That from Ben Kuzma's twitter feed.It is believed that the Canucks are willing to give Shane Doan Sedin money ($6.1 million per season), which is over $1 million more than Ryan Kesler makes, which isn't exactly "fair". But hey, in the UFA market, when your team is going for it, sometimes you have to overpay. If the Canucks do land Doan, expect the Roberto Luongo trade to be more of a salary dump.

The buzz continues to escalate throughout the Fraser Valley real estate community that Francesco Aquilini has his sights on buying the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre and the land it occupies. By extension, Aquilini would cut a deal with the Calgary Flames that would result in the Vancouver Canucks’ No. 1 farm team, the Chicago Wolves, switched to Abbotsford.

That from Greg Douglas of the Vancouver Sun.Now this makes a lot of sense and I hope it gets done. I know it's one thing for the people of Abbotsford to get to watch an AHL team, but it's the Calgary Flames' affiliate. Screw the Flames! The very low attendance at the games suggest the same. Could you imagine the excitement generated if people in the Fraser Valley could watch the Canucks' affiliate. It would be gold. Imagine being able to watch Eddie Lack, Kevin Connauton or Brendan Gaunce in action / developing. Imagine the Canucks calling up a player and all he has to do is drive for half an hour to get to Rogers Arena. Big difference than Chicago. Oh wait, apparently it's not that easy

The Hawks lost eight of 11 in March before winning it all. Nearly the same story for Sidney Crosby's Penguins. They lost 7 of 11 in February, then won it all. The Red Wings most-recent cup team lost 10 of 11 in February. And the Anaheim Ducks may be the best example of all, losing 17 of 25 in an ugly, post all-star performance that was forgotten by the time they hoisted the cup in June.

Perspective from The Province's Jason Botchford. Nice. I was going to do up a post on this but Botch already did all the work. Some good quotes from Hank in there too.

Canuck coach Alain Vigneault is expected to brief reporters later today on the status of Kesler and defenceman Keith Ballard, who also missed practice after leaving Wednesday's game with a back injury.

That from the Vancouver Sun. Kesler was not at practice. Luongo practiced early but it was not a full practice for him. Vigneault, according to Tony Gallagher was bag skating the boys this morning and calling them out. Also, Eddie Lack has been sent back down to Chicago. The Canucks don't play again until Sunday. Update: Via the Canucks twitter feed: Mason Raymond has been cleared for contact, Luongo is day to day, no timetable for Ballard's return (back) and Kesler (shoulder) should be ready to play on Sunday.

"That was the story of Game 1, at least in my eyes," Boyle said. "We're aware of what Nashville was accusing them of the series before. I saw it first-hand last night." I mean, even the penalty I got, I'm thankful Lapierre got a diving penalty for it because their, you know, heads are going back like they're getting shot with a gun," Boyle said. "It is what it is. I'm not going to sit here and cry about it. Hopefully the refs see it most of the time."

Dan Boyle and Douglas Murray are unimpressed with Canucks players embellishing. Huh, because you know, the Sharks don't dive. Ever!

"Vancouver was not a destination point for really high-level free agents for a variety of reasons. Anywhere from taxes to rain to travel, you name it," he said. "I felt if we were going to be a competitive team and organization, we had to change that mindset. We did it by approving a plan that was in place to redo the dressing room facility. "We did it by initially offering more money to certain players we felt would legitimize our team in the short-term for others, one of them being Mats Sundin -- he made a significant difference in our organization -- and we tried to provide a guarantee we were going to make players better by every means possible."

Hey! A Toronto Sun article that I know you'll want to read!

"All this Cup talk about town is counterproductive in some ways," Kevin Bieksa said today. "I can tell you there isn't one guy in this room who has even thought about the playoffs. I mean, have you looked at our schedule, we've got what, 14,15 games in January. We're just trying to get through the month, honestly we haven't even thought about a Cup in here. It's play, day off, practice, play. Man we're just trying to survive the month."

No shit. You tell 'em, Bieksa. And for even more WTF Vancouver media today: Botchford feels that there is still a mini controversy about Luongo not doing the circle skate salute to the fans after being named the first star in Calgary. Oh really? Last time I checked no one gave a shit. Do you? Check out Luongo's response here. He remains defiant. I say good. *Edit: Vancitydan posted a masterful piece about this earlier. Check it out.

Canucks need to clear $1.8m annualized for Salo RT @capgeek: W asst from @BotchonCanucks we confirmed Canucks have cap exception for Rypien

Botchford tweet. Well that looks a little better now, doesn't it? Also, Iain MacIntyre reports that there is still a chance that Salo may not return at all, as he and the team are treating this injury very seriously.

Ryan Parent will be put on waivers tomorrow by the Canucks.

That from Dan Murphy on Twitter. Parent has a 1-way contract. He could be claimed either on waivers or re-entry waivers if the Canucks run into injury problems with their D down the road. He was hanging out with the team as the 8th defenceman behind Rome, but with Raymond returning it's cap crunch time! "Salary Cap" and "Canucks" are going to be a hot topic over the next several weeks. Especially now that Sami Salo has begun skating with the team. I'll have more on that soon.

They were better against Chicago stars Patrick Kane, who had an empty-net goal, and Jonathan Toews than they were in the opener. The Blackhawks’ brawnier lineup and more physical play had no effect on the Canucks. Luongo was excellent for a fifth straight game — further evidence that his epic second-half struggles are over. And, really, who wouldn't take a split from the first two games on the road?

Well said, Iain MacIntyre. I've got a zen philosophy going on today too.
