Morning Buzz: Mini-sticks and sick dangles; recapping All-Star Weekend
That's a wrap on All-Star Weekend, a healthy mix of awkward, entertaining, embarrassing and hilarious, with some memorable moments sprinkled here and there. Mostly, it felt like a victory lap for Daniel Alfredsson and the great career he's had in Ottawa. Everyone wanted to see him score that hat-trick goal and take home the MVP (except Tim Thomas, who made a few big saves in the 3rd and has now pissed off people in two national capitals in one week).
Links from the weekend's festivities and more ahead!
Morning Buzz: Canucks All-Stars happy together; talkin' trade targets; Andy McDonald on Ovechkin
The speculation is over, and the Sedins and Edler will play on the same team for the ASG, along with fellow countrymen Daniel Alfredsson, Henrik Lundqvist and Erik Karlsson. Hank had a great quip when asked what it was like to play against Daniel last year:
"It was nice to play with some good players last year, finally."
If they're going to start chirping each other, I don't imagine Daniel will let him forget how much earlier he was taken in the draft.
Morning Buzz: Canucks ride the Lightning, plus the mystery of the drunken All-Star goalie
It wasn't a Picasso, it wasn't even your 4-year-old niece's pre-school drawing, but the Canucks managed to get it done. You really get the sense this team is running on fumes right now. They need home for a rest. David Booth, Aaron Rome, and Sami Salo would be nice too.
Before we get to the links, I have something to present to you entitled "The Case of The Drunken All-Star Goalie Who Was Left in to Get Shelled". Intrigued?
Afternoon Caffeine Jolt
This has turned out to be a busy day for news, both about the Canucks practice and around the league. And, for some reason, a whole bunch of big news decided to be released just at the top of this hour. Since it appears that Jordan hasn't figured out the trick of adding works full-time and doesn't have the time to add links to his post throughout the day yet, I'll give you a bunch of stuff right now:
- The Kings just fired head coach Terry Murray, and will have John Stevens fill in as interm head coach. Another one bites the dust! Rumoured potential replacements on Twitter include Darryl Sutter, Randy Carlyle and Bob Hartley. Oh boy.....
- The Devils just traded Rod Pelley and Mark Fraser to the Ducks for Kurtis Foster and Timo Pielmeier. You guys will remember Foster for spending time with the Wild and Oilers. I also remember Pielmeier as the hot Bakersfield goalie at my first Victoria Salmon Kings game. Yes, this game.
- The Sharks have activated Antero Niittymaki from IR. He will go to AHL affiliate Worchester for conditioning.
- There will be no suspension on Sharks player Andrew Desjardins for Saturday's boarding on Sami Lepisto. NHL just slaps him a $2500 fine.
- Another beneficiary of the fine-and-no-suspension treatment today is Brad Marchand, for slew-footing Matt Niskanen of the Penguins.
- A couple updates from The Province: Cody Hodgson is cleared to play tomorrow, and Roberto Luongo is expected to start against the Blue Jackets. Also noted this morning was that Sami Salo didn't skate today, having a "maintenance day".
- Via Puck Daddy, the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team has been reborn in Russia.
- Speaking of Russia, my eye-candy Nikita Filatov is heading back to CSKA Moscow of the KHL.
- If you're looking for more info on our opponent tomorrow night, go check out The Cannon. Among Columbus news today is Dane Byers being called up to replace Derek Dorsett, and Steve Mason's expected return to the pipes for tomorrow night.
- If you're looking to watch hockey tonight, the league's only game (Devils vs Lightning) is on TSN2 at 4:00 pm PST.
- If you don't get TSN2, you can watch Canucks.com features instead. Maxim Lapierre talks about his journey to the NHL (and here's part 2), Ryan Kesler talks about playing for Ohio State University, and Cody Hodgson speaks to the press today.
Morning Buzz: Canucks share the shutout love, NHL sees chiropractor
[Mgmt note: Everyone put down the donuts and Irish coffee real quick and give a round of applause for Jordan Clarke, our new morning links author and a debonair gentleman to boot.]
Well, this is my first morning post at Nucks Misconduct, and there is certainly no shortage of topics to cover. But just for a laugh, why not start with the home team? Come on and JUMP!
A Bit Of: Needing A New Contributor, Planking, Ovechkin and More
With the inevitable loss of The Stanchion to The Province, the door of opportunity has been opened for us at Nucks Misconduct to take on a new contributor or two. What we are looking for: Monday - Friday morning posts with a bit of opinion but mostly links to Canucks news and NHL news. As with what Stanchion provided, humor is always welcomed, but it's not a necessity. So if you want the opportunity to reach a wider audience with your writing, which SportsBlog Nation definitely provides: drop an email to Yankee Canuck and myself expressing interest, linking to a website you write for (if applicable), or showcase your talent in Nucks Misconduct's FanPost section. We'll even accept recommendations.
OK, some Canucks / NHL links after the jump.
And Boom Goes the Dynamite (Now with more coaches fired)
As I was typing that, three more NHL coaches were fired. In case you didn't hear, this morning the Capitals fired Bruce "I eat my feelings" Boudreau and the Hurricanes fired Paul "I'll be back" Maurice from their respective head coaching jobs. Who replaced them? Dale "I'll **** you up if you look at me funny" Hunter gets the job in Washington, while Kirk "I have no funny nickname but I'm a really good coach" Muller finally gets his shot at a head coaching job with the Hurricanes.
Oh, there goes two more coaches. I am sure TSN is ecstatic about the latest news, they can always use more panels, with the ultimate dream being a panel that discusses their panels, so let's all wish TSN well in their dreams this holiday season.
And Boom Goes the Dynamite (Now with less peppermint)
Why less peppermint you ask? Because that is apparently the rule for the day. According to the coffee shop above my work place. I was unaware that ordering peppermint hot chocolate (Spare me your coffee holier than thou attitude, I can't stomach coffee) does not involve peppermint, but most likely involves spitting in your used wrigley's gum for just a hint of peppermint flavor, as that is what I appear to have gotten.
That being said, last night was a solid, if not boring, win. Schneider played amazing, though, and Kesler proved that as long as he can get that wrist shot off with no goalie in the net, he is near unstoppable. Is Kesler as good at empty net goals as Pavol Demitra was? No, not even close. Nobody was the king of empty nets like Pavol was. But Kesler did a decent job of it last night.
