Who was the best at penalties drawn and taken last season?
I've been sifting through Behind The Net's ES stats the past few days for something I hope to post next week and keep coming across the Penalty +/- category, basically the correlation between the penalties you take and the penalties you force the opponent to draw.
If you're Hordichuk, Rypien, Glass or other such energy guys chances are you will give more than you take. But drawing non-coincidental penalties are pretty important to get the team on the man advantage obviously while not sending another guy (a potential PK'er even) along with him. If you're Vancouver and your PK is 18th in the regular season and dead last in the post season, it behooves your squad (and the sanity of your faithful fans) to jump on every advantage possible.
Not so much is made about the ability or talent it takes to draw penalties, but it's worth a look . After the jump, check out who was the best and worst at drawing penalties at even strength for the PIM-happy Canucks in 2009-2010.
September 2 Open Ice
Good morning.
- Added (10:08 am): As Yankee just put in the fanshots, there's a good chance Nolan Baumgartner could be the next captain for the Manitoba Moose should he not make the cut for the Canucks this fall.
- Behind the Net takes a look at how many points Henrik Sedin will have next season. Vote your conscience.
- No need to worry about what Brooks put in the NY Post last night, Darren Dreger just shot it all down: "NHL sources say no ultimatum was given to the NHLPA." Yep, as we suspected, don't believe everything Larry Brooks writes.
- The Sharks have made it official that they signed Antti Niemi to a 1-year $2M contract. Fear the Fin has plenty of reaction on the signing most of them believed wasn't going to happen because their true need was defense.
- While on the topic of Niemi, congratulations to our reader VCR Milli, who was the only one to correctly guess all 3 categories in Beantown's "Where Will Niemi End Up?" game from a month ago. No official word yet on whether there is a prize.
- How about another story about Alexandre Bolduc and his recovery from shoulder surgery?
- Hey look, the Canucks Reports are back! Yesterday's edition includes Milan Lucic joining the Canucks practice at UBC, a look at the spiffy new mask Eddie Lack designed, and a Q&A with Victor Oreskovich.
- In case anyone is interested, preseason tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10:00 AM PDT. Get your tickets to see the prospects not only battle against the Flames, Ducks, Oilers or Sharks, but also against each other for the last roster spots.
- So, apparently some possibly clinically-insane woman has sent emails accusing Sidney Crosby of being a narcistic drunk sex addict. UPDATE: The story on SBNation Pittsburgh was removed.
Open topic for today: On the subject of narcissism, which NHL player do you think is the most narcistic?
A well placed source reports that the league has informed the Players' Assn. that the league will grandfather the recently submitted Kovalchuk 15-year, $100M contract, Luongo's 12-year, $64M deal that is entering its second season and Hossa's 12-year, $63.3M deal that also is entering its second season into the CBA under the following conditions:
1. That the cap hit on future multi-year contracts will not count any seasons that end with the player over 40 years of age. The cap hit would be calculated on the average of the salary up through age 40 only.
2. That the cap hit on future contracts longer than five years will be calculated under a formula granting additional weight to the five years with the highest salary.
A NY Post report on the still on-going kerfuffle between the League and several front-loaded, long term deals.
And if the union refuses? Luongo's contract COULD be voided. Take it for what it's worth.
(h/t to Kukla for the pointer and bitterguy for the fanshot)
The Votes Are In & The Exposed Are Out
For the SBN Mock Draft that takes place tomorrow, James Mirtle and Gabe Desjardins (GMs of Winnipeg and Quebec City respectively) can choose from the following unprotected Vancouver players as voted on by you: Glass, Oreskovich, Rypien, Hordichuk, Perrault, Tambellini, Salo, O'Brien, Rome, Alberts & Baumgartner.
September 1 Open Ice
Like missy was alluding to yesterday..September..summer is almost over. But halleluiah! Training Camp starts in 18 days, and the Young Stars Tournament begins September 12.
- The Canucks are not sure if Cody Hodgson will participate in the Young Stars Tournament or if he'll head straight to veteran's camp. - Province.
- As the folks at CDC found out, Raffi Torres will wear #13. Blasphemy! (I kid).
- If you haven't voted yet, pick which Canucks defenceman (here) and forward (here) we should protect for SBN's mock expansion draft. Plus, join in on the conversation in the comments thread.
- Chuckles Canuckles posted an image in the Fanshot section of the logo that will occupy center ice at
GM PlaceRoger's Arena. I'm with Beantown on this one: no Canucks logo? Pfft! - Chris Chelios has officially retired at the ripe age of 48. He moves directly into a management position as advisor to hockey operations with the Red Wings. Love him or hate him, you have to give him credit for a fantastic NHL career. A dirty little bugger he was though. Remember Ron Hextall charging out of his net to beat on him for the nasty hit he put on Brian Propp?
- Nikolai Khabibulin has been sentenced to a minimum 30 day jail sentence for his impaired driving charges. However the decision has been appealedl and so Khabby is free to attend Oilers' training camp until further notice.
Botchford talks to Jeff Tambellini about cracking a spot on the Canucks' roster. Tambellini is eyeing the 3rd line, but sure wouldn't mind playing in the top 6 with Alexandre Burrows out to start the season.
August 31 Open Ice
News flash: it's already the last day of August. Does that frighten you?
- Be sure to vote on the last defenceman and the last forward we will protect for SBNation's mock expansion draft.
- You know that Victor Oreskovich video I posted last night? Looks like the Vancouver Sun, the Montreal Gazette, and the Victoria Times Colonist all used it as a source for analysis.
- The Province looks back at the off-season moves the Canucks made.
- Mike Chen wonders where us bloggers get our hockey news from.
- Apparently, the Islanders and Doug Weight have finalized a 1-year contract extension.
- As Sean posted last night, an interview with another Canucks newcomer Bill Sweatt.
- Happy 26th birthday to Ryan Kesler!
Open topic for today: What TV show will you always keep yourself from watching?
Mock NHL Expansion Draft - Canucks 5th Defenseman
As long as you're looking at the final forward to protect, chime in on the defense as well. We have some disagreement on that fifth slot, so cast your vote and we'll throw a cupcake party for the rest before a few make their way (perhaps!) to the fine people of Winnipeg and Quebec City.
Voting ends Thursday morning.
