2013 Nucks Misconduct Playoff Fantasy Competitions Setup Time

This could easily be a 1st-round matchup. - Thearon W. Henderson

As the playoffs approach, our blog enjoys playing fantasy competitions during the post-season. It is now time to set up this year's format.

Hello everyone!

As many of you recall, we here at Nucks Misconduct have been organizing our own playoff competitions over the last couple years. Now that we actually have playoffs this year, and with their kickoff next week, it's time to prepare this year's competitions!

Brackets competition

I am very happy with the format of the brackets competition that we have used in past years, so there's not really anything to adjust here. Here's a recap of the rules and format:

  • For each playoff matchup, you would select the winning team and number of games it takes to win the series. An example of this is "Canucks in 6", where the Canucks would win that series in 6 games. All 4 rounds are predicted before the start of the playoffs.
  • Last year, we changed the formatting of the points system for our competition. In the 1st round of the playoffs, each correctly guessed winning team was worth 2 points, with an additional bonus point for calling the number of games. For example, in a series where the Canucks won in 6 games, a "Canucks in 6" prediction is worth 3 points, "Canucks in 7" is worth 2 points, and predicting an elimination of the Canucks is worth 0 points.
  • For the following rounds, the points were adjusted as follows. In the 2nd round, the correct team was worth 3 points, with 1 bonus point for the number of games. 3rd round was 4 and 2, then the Cup Finals was worth 6 and 3.

As I said above, I am very happy with this format, so I will not be changing that at all for this year.

Players competition

The basic summary is that each of us picks a group of 14 players from the 16 playoff teams, and we get a point each time one of our players gets a goal or assist. Here are the rules we followed last year for picking the teams:

  • You must have a minimum of 3 defensive players on your team.
  • You can have a maximum of 2 players from the same playoff team. For example, you can have both Sedins, but you're not allowed a 3rd Canuck.
  • The 14 players you choose must have a combined cap of 800 regular season points.
  • If a player is traded midseason, their total regular season points include what was earned with both teams. For example, Derek Roy had 22 points with Dallas before being traded to Vancouver, so he is sitting at a total of 27 regular season points as of April 23rd.

Now, this format is not allowed to stay exactly the same this year. Due to the lockout shortening the season to only 48 games, it would be way too easy to pick all the top 14 NHL point-getters this season while staying under 800 points. Therefore, that cap of 800 points is being reduced to 450 points for this season. This will allow the same ratio of points per game per player as the original 800 in 82 games. This is only a single season reduction, we can return to 800 for next year.

Another thing I would like to suggest is changing the maximum of players per playoff team. When I started these playoff competitions in 2010, we started with a maximum of 1 player per playoff team. We increased this to 2 players in 2011, and kept it at that last year. For this year, I am offering you guys a choice:

  • Reduce the maximum to 1 player per team
  • Keep the maximum at 2 players per team
  • Increase the maximum to 3 players per team

I am not quite ready for the chaos of removing the maximum all-together, but changing it up could make it even more interesting. You can vote on this in the poll at the end of this article.

Once the last regular season game is finished on Sunday April 28th, I will publish the sign-up posts for these competitions, and you can submit your entries into the comment threads there. With SBNation's upgrades this year, these posts will be in full article format instead of fanposts, and can be found in the story stream that I started up with today's post. I will also post the leaderboards each round to this story stream, so it should be easier to keep track of them.

The deadline for signing up, as in previous years, will be at the scheduled start time for the first playoff game on Tuesday April 30th. Please notice that the time crunch between the regular season and playoffs this year is going to reduce the sign-up timeline to approximately 48 hours, so make sure you set aside some time to sign up. All entries will be final once that first playoff game starts, and there will be no late submissions.

If you have any suggestions, please leave them in the comments, and I'll see if they're worth consideration. Stay tuned for the sign-up posts.
