Rival territory: Winging It In Motown
Vancouver lost their first chance at clinching a playoff spot the other night in Dallas. Before that game, I thought that Detroit having the ability to tie us at 57 points could keep us from clinching the other night. Now we face the showdown game against the Red Wings, and the timing couldn't be better. Detroit is at 47 points with 5 games left, and could earn a maximum of 57 points if they win all those last five. A win by Vancouver tonight would put us at 57 points, Detroit at a maximum of 55 points, and the Canucks officially into a playoff spot.
It is fascinating how Detroit might not make the playoffs this year. Sitting in 9th at the moment, this could be the first time in 23 years that the Wings last missed the playoffs. (The last time was 1990, just before I was born.) They have won 4 Stanley Cups in my lifetime, and have been a perennial playoff team. They had such a dynasty that the Canucks have tried to emulate. Now it is strange to see them on the outside looking in.
