Canucks At Predators Preview: Vulgar Display Of Power Play

How's THIS for southern hospitality, ****ERS!

It's all about the Canucks' power play in the news lately and rightfully so. I cannot remember when it was stellar. It has been so damned long.

Surely the Canucks cannot turn the puck over as much as they did against the Avalanche, right? Expect a much cleaner game from them in this one in that aspect.

It appears Vancouver has the NW Division, and 3rd place in the West locked. I hope they don't go into drift mode now, once again playing a team that will be golfing and listening to Travis Tritt albums soon enough.

I find some of the Preds stats above intriguing and uncharacteristic: ok, they take the least amount of penalties in the NHL, so the Canucks are going to have to make them unravel, especially considering their PK is 27th in the NHL. Nashville scores the fewest goals in the NHL and that shows in their 5 on 5 and power play fail numbers. They are top 10 in blocked shots though so expect to see a lot of those (which may once again force Alexander Edler to pass more than shoot on the power play). Am I right?

It's all about the Canucks' power play in the news lately and rightfully so. I cannot remember when it was stellar. It has been so damned long. But you can see the tentativeness of the top unit (which gobbles up most of the PP time). Over-passing and under-shooting. Trying to make the perfect play to get around the blockers. Trying to make the perfect play without the blockers. Meanwhile. poor Jason Garrison, who has no problem shooting any chance he gets, is stuck on the 2nd unit. Garrison now is what Edler WAS. It is what it is. Put him on the top PP unit, Vigneault.

There are 7 games left for the Canucks to play. They are quickly running out of time to remedy the PP shame. However, the fortunes can change over one single game. Get that confidence back. They won't get very far in the playoffs if they don't fix this. Or will they? Here are a couple of examples to make you feel better:

-The Kings had a 12.8% PP efficiency in the playoffs during their Cup run. That ranked them 12th out of 16 and was lower than the Canucks' current 13.6% efficiency. So if you are not going to kick ass on the PP, you have to kick ass 5 on 5. Period.

-The Bruins were a piddly 11.4% in their 2011 Cup run (pukes). That ranked them 14th out of 16 playoff teams. The Canucks had a 20.4% playoff PP average that year (8th), but the Bruins were easily the best 5 on 5.

So this whole argument is invalid. A good PP helps, but it is hardly something to use as a predicting tool.

ROY TO 2ND LINE CENTER?

AV tried that for a while against the Avalanche and he may do the same thing against Nashville: a Burrows-Roy-Kesler 2nd line. Kesler thinks that may hinder his speed game but Vigneault thinks otherwise. They never really agree, do they?

That makes the 3rd line: Raymond-Ebbett-Kassian, and leaves Hansen on line 1.

While I like the bold new 2nd line, I don't trust Ebbett to consistently be a scoring threat at center on line 3. It smacks more of a 2-line team than when Roy centers line 3. Hey, I am just an armchair coach. What the fuck do I know?

Roberto Luongo will start this one, since it is a back to back game situation.

Wanna know the Preds' lineup? No, you don't. Well, keep an eye out for that Filip Forsberg kid. He's really good.

SCORE-PREDICTING WIZARDS UPDATE

No change last game, because none of us, except that traitor Smoboy41, picked the Avalanche to win. Just kidding Smo. That was a good read on the team by you.
