Canucks Play of the Week: Tanev is the Manev

Rich Lam

The Canucks Play of the Week is a weekly feature that breaks down the best play from the past seven day. This week: Chris Tanev scores his first career NHL goal to seal an overtime victory against the Oilers.

This weekly feature will break down the best play from the Canucks past week. The play of the week (POTW) may be the prettiest or most skilled moment, or it may be a moment that was particularly significant for a variety of reasons. Feel free to send me your suggestions for POTWs via email or Twitter.

Game: Canucks at Edmonton Oilers

Date: February 4, 2013

The Play:

The boxscore:

OT Period

4:40: Chris Tanev (1) (Assists: Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin)

The breakdown:

Henrik Sedin and Tanev's partner (Keith Ballard) do a great tag-team job of keeping the puck in the zone. After Ballard kicks the puck free to Daniel Sedin, Henrik immediately begins streaking to the open ice in the Oilers' zone. Showing good puck sense, Tanev retreats to be the last man back in case they lose possession.

After a nifty return pass by Henrik, Daniel has the puck along the boards. As Henrik continues toward the net, he draws the attention of two Oilers defenders. A third is focused on Daniel. Tanev has moved back into an offensive position and is wide open to receive the pass. It looks like Nail Yakupov blew his defensive coverage by focusing on Henrik instead of the pointman.

The rookie's mistake is the Canucks' gain. With three Oilers' defenders collapsed below the hashmarks, Tanev has all kinds of time to walk in from the blue line and rifle home the goal. He makes no mistake in blasting it past Devyn Dubnyk to seal the OT win and earn his first ever NHL goal.

The Significance:

Chris Tanev made his NHL debut in January, 2011. Since that time, he had played 62 regular season games with the Canucks before the match against Edmonton. Yet he had never scored a goal in the NHL. What a time to break that slump.

With the Canucks heading to yet another overtime, they were looking for a hero to cap the comeback victory against the Oilers. Tanev was on the in overtime with the Sedin twins, and was the beneficiary of some classic Sedinery. Needless to say, it was a huge moment for the young blueliner. And his teammates sure seemed excited about his first NHL goal:
