The Big Red Machine is no more. The days of dominant Detroit are over. Thank God! Just thinking of Detroit's days in the sun with Yzerman, Shanahan, Hull, Osgood, Lidstrom, Maltby, Draper and the other pile of filthy players makes me want to puke. Jealousy? Yup! It sure is sweet that the Canucks have been doing better than Detroit for the past several years. It's our time. Not theirs.
I wonder if any of the animosity remains now that Detroit plays in the East. There's no big modern history of violence between the two teams, but there is that competitive spirit thang going on when they play each other. There's a buzz in The Library during the games. It's Detroit. It's an Original 6.
It's strange getting used to, but the Canucks will only play the Wings twice this year, and likely once or twice every year from now on. After this one, the teams don't play each other until early February.
KNOW THINE ENEMY
The Wings have lost 4 straight games, but managed 2 points because of an OT loss against the Rangers and a shootout loss to San Jose last week. Doesn't matter! That's 4 straight losses! It couldn't happen to a better team.
They have only scored 5 goals in their last 4 games. Keep it up! I like it!
I do see a glaring problem with Detroit, and it's a rarity for them I would think: Not many point-getters beyond Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Alfredsson and Kronwall. Those 4 have combined for a total of 41 points. Detroit players in total have 72 points. So, 4 players scoring 57% of the team's total points. Detroit's 5th point-getter, Johan Franzen has 2 goals and 3 assists in 12 games, but will miss this game with an undisclosed injury. The great Todd Bertuzzi has 3 goals and 1 assist in 12 games. Stephen Weiss was supposed to be a superb acquisition for the Wings, but only has 2 goals and no assists in his first 12 games with the team.
(The Canucks' top 4 points guys in the Sedins, Kesler and Santorelli account for 46% of the team's total points).
The Wings will get Patrick Eaves back on the ice for the first time this season.
The Wings started the season with a 6-2 record. Fortunate, or they would be in the Eastern Conference basement right now.
From the Detroit Free Press:
"The second period’s the hardest period," Babcock said. "When we’re playing good, it’s where we always eat the other team alive. They can’t get their people on the ice and we wear ’em out.
"We don’t execute coming out of our own zone, so we spend too much time coming out of our own zone. In the second period, that means you end up out there tired.
"We don’t spend enough time in the O-zone because we’re too light on the puck. We don’t get enough shots because we won’t shoot the puck. We don’t come through the neutral zone good, we don’t execute."
Oh please may this same team show up in Vancouver! (Which is highly unlikely)

YOU MADE MY PRAISE LIST
Hank Sedin has played 14 games this season. There has been only ONE FUCKING GAME that he has not recorded a point!
A certain Province writer was saying that Beastmode and Ryan Kesler no longer go in the same sentence. Well, the KesLord now has 5 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 games. Beastmode Reactivated.
Daniel Sedin has scored 3 goals and 3 assists in his last 4 games.
THE SHITLIST IS TAKING THE DAY OFF.
But if it wasn't, Tom Sestito would be on it. Just because he's Tom Sestito and he reminds me of a worse version of Darcy Hordichuk. So, I guess the Shitlist didn't really take the day off now, did it? Keep up the excellent work, Tommy Boy! If you keep this up you'll lose every fight this year, score a point if the puck accidentally bounces off your caveman frame (that can't happen because you lose the race to the front of the net!), and you'll be a -12 on a winning team! Woo! 3 cheers for Burrito!

The last time these teams met:
Remember when the Red Wings won 23 straight at home? It came to an end in Orcian fashion:
That was a beautiful, cocky moment.
I think this was in 2006:
The title of this preview post has been brought to you by Mr. Mister. Finally, a tune I am sure FormerHab is not going to be proud of me picking.
Great voice on that dude.
