A present from Mike Gillis and Lawrence Gilman? Awww, they did miss us! Showing their appreciation by locking down the Canucks' #1 defenceman long term.

A nice bit of news as we head into Opening Night, huh Canucks fans? And to make it better, GMMG broke the news himself on Twitter! Considering what the market would be for him in the summer, the reported $5 Million a season is another example of the Canucks getting a player to take less in order to keep the core together. Great work by Gillis and Gilman!

After a career year, it's nice to see him get a deal that's good value for himself and the club. Feel free to comment away and don't forget we will have pregame discussion, and a game thread we have all been looking forward to for a long time coming up tomorrow! See you there!

(note: Kent and YC stepped on each other's toes here since they were so giddy so YC's take is below)

Alex Edler is going no where, signing a new deal on the eve of the new season to the tune of six years at $30 million. The breakdown hasn't been released yet, but at a minimum of $5 million per season he's now the highest paid defenseman, toping both Jason Garrison and Kevin Bieksa at $4.6 million respectively. It also includes a NTC.

More importantly it means the top two pairings are now locked in until at least the end of the 2015-16 season. That's excellent security for the team composition not to mention, at 26 years old, for Edler himself.

Despite the back injury and some inconsistency (let's just never watch last year's first round ever again ok?), Edler is arguably their best all around blueliner, having lead the blueline in points last year (7th best in the league) and adding five PPGs three of the past four seasons. He's used to logging heavy time on both the PP and PK and saw some stiff competition to boot, no doubt ready to see more with Sami Salo gone. Perfect he's not, but a healthy Edler eating up 20+ minutes and being a force at both ends of the ice is invaluable, especially during the short season ahead.

Looking down the line, it poses a bit of a cap crunch. They'll have damn near $23 million tied up in their top four blueliners plus Keith Ballard which is a bit stiff (most expensive third pairing in hockey, yo!) and hurts the chances for Tanev to punch out of the third pairing. This crunch also includes obviously what to with Luongo still around plus the pending free agencies for the Sedins and Hansen by 2014 along with Malhotra and Higgins at the end of this season.

Fans have been saying for a long time they're waiting for Edler to pull all his talents together (saw Jordan add a pointer to this on Twitter: some believe he's Norris trophy material now) and have an all around monster year. The stage is set.

Tomorrow feels a lot more fun now.
