Vandermeer, 32, has played in 461 NHL games, recording 105 points (25-80-105) and 664 penalty minutes. The 6’1", 208 lbs. defenceman split the 2011.12 season with the Edmonton Oilers (2-12-14 in 62 games played) and San Jose Sharks (1-3-4 in 25 games played). In 21 playoff contests, he has registered two assists and 17 penalty minutes.
Prior to entering the NHL, the Caroline, AB, native captained the WHL Red Deer Rebels to a Memorial Cup championship in the 2000.01 season. That same year, he was awarded the Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy (Humanitarian of the Year Award).
Once again, depth I guess. And Vandermeer brings toughness. I can't shake the feeling that something's going down and it's just a matter of time. This one's almost as much of a headscratcher as the Barker signing though. Anyway, have at 'er...
Zandberg barges in:
Hey Kent, where is the love? I like this signing. Some Canucks players apparently vouched for the guy so that Gillis could sign him.
Oiler fans can mock the Vandermeer signing all they want but we got him at $700,000 on a 2-way contract. Oiler fans...Screw the Oilers fans! Who are they to judge players when their team has been shit for the past several years? Think of it this way...and this is what I believe: you put Vandermeer on a super team like the Canucks and he will play better in these surroundings. His role will be simplified. Think Brent Sopel winning the Stanley Cup playing for Chicago. Am I right? It's not like the Oilers know anything about defense anyway. Vandermeer will fight for a spot here and that is a good thing.

Here are Jim's career stats:
Ah, I guess Oiler fans hate Jim's -15 rating in 2010-11. Well Taylor Hall was a -9 that season. Jordan Eberle was a -12. Linus Omark: does a spinaroonie at the beginning of his shootout attempt yadda yadda: -16 that season. Hell, almost every Oiler was a MINUS player in 2010-11.
He's a tough guy who backs down from no one. The thing here is that he is a defenceman. I hate it when defencemen fight and the team goes down a D-man for an extended period of time. However, sometimes the guys need a cop, right Sedins?
Here's Vandermeer commenting on getting signed today. He knows he has to earn a spot, and he chooses his words carefully:
