|2011 - Derek Joslin||44||2||2||4||-15||35||0||0||0||36|
News1130 broke the news this morning that Vancouver has signed Derek Joslin to a 1 year / 2 way contract, no doubt to help fill in the depth void left by Rome/Sulzer/Parent/Gragnani. For Joslin's part he thinks the departure of Salo along with Rome will give him the opportunity to make an impact.
Maybe. Then again...maybe not.
I'd recommend checking out Canes Country's profile of him at the end of the season, most notably that Joslin made what seems like a seamless switch from defense to fourth line forward for a chunk of the season.
As far the scouting report goes:
Assets - Is a solid puck-moving defenseman with offensive potential and decent size. Can also quarterback the power play and has a good point shot.
Flaws - Needs more work without the puck and especially in defensive-zone coverage. Doesn't utilize his 6-1 frame to the utmost.
Certainly sounds like his attitude and work ethic exceed his talent and on-ice product. His easy minutes and fugly corsi last season suggest he's not to be trusted in his own zone (which makes him sound less like Rome and more like Gragnani). Doubtful he can punch ahead of Alberts on the depth chart, but at the same time if he shows up in camp and isn't a complete train wreck AV could mancrush hard.
Or, hell, maybe he's destined for the third pairing once Ballard is inevitably traded. I KID! Sorta...
