A Solid Canucks Piece By.....MARK SPECTOR
Then we spoke to captain Henrik Sedin about the culture of distraction - the diving, the chirping, the biting - that had hitched itself to the Canucks ride last year. And he, too, told us something we never expected to hear.
"I think it needs to (change)," Henrik said, for the first time in our recollection, anyhow. "I think we've grown as a team, and it needs to change. If I would be a referee, and I would see guys do that kind of stuff…
"I get back to Detroit," Henrik concluded. "They're a good team, they're always there, and they don't need to have players doing that kind of stuff."
That's just a cool Hank quote from that article. Check out the rest from Spector, titled "A Quiet Confidence" here. It's gonna make you feel good.

Great read
Especially considering the writer! It takes a big man to admit when he’s wrong ;). Let’s hope what hank says is true. The Boston game showed some cracks in that maturity and the fact that they won doesn’t help that.
It is a great read
And it is nice to see Spector coming around.
Not to call our Captain Ginger a liar or anything though, but you guys know where I am coming from on that question.
I saw two dives by Wings players in that first period, one by Todd Bertuzzi that must have been “this” close to being called on him by the ref that then talked with him for 30 seconds about it.
The Wings dive, everyone dives. But I love that our captain has taken that stand, its a good one to take.

that was a really good read.

I agree with vancitydan. For the Captain to come out and not only admit that there has been diving but to say that it needs to stop is nothing short of a revelation in todays NHL. It is refreshing to hear something other than the same old sound bites and quotes regurgitated over and over and it shows the class of Henrik Sedin.
Many teams have players that dive but for some reason the Canucks are usually singled out as the worst offenders. Maybe it’s because the majority of the media stop, look and listen to what comes out of the east. Mouths that roar seem to bellow the loudest and longest starting in Toronto and reverberate outward from there.
I can’t count the number of times Don Cherry and his butt-kissing buddy Ron MacLean have gone to great lengths to showcase the negatives about the Canucks and especially the Sedins.
Nice to see something positive for a change.
the Eastern media is the biggest part of that narrative
since Burr and Kes shut the eff up a couple years ago, those guys back East just chose to ignore that and go with the same narrative.
It was funny, last year, for me anyhow, how the Preds tried to use that as a ploy when they ahd just been exposed by the Ducks as the biggest divers left in the playoffs. The dive penalty that Tootoo took was probably a little harsh in that series, but it was a turning point, and it came not long after Legwand tried a dive so breathtakingly bad ( at blue line with no one within 5 feet of him, and down like a sniper shot him )…that the ref chastised him all the way to the bench.
But yeah, Don and Ron will only go with the iso cam on Burr, and, to be fair, he did no one any favours by biting a finger in the Final.
They made a helluva lot of mileage out of Lappy taking a Z’ stick in the gut and trying to get a call too…ignoring the fact that Marchand did the same type of thing 3 times in the same game, one a flop at Lappy’s feet that had botht he ref and Lappy sharing a laugh down the ice as they ignored him and went up ice.
Everyone does it. I don’t get why its just the Canucks that get the “rep” either

The rep is earned
The captain knows it and we should to. It takes more than half a season to change people’s opinions but as evidenced by this exact article opinions are changing. It was a strategy to try and draw penalties that didn’t work in the post-season cause the refs put their whistles away and it only served as a distraction for the players but lets not have a “who us?” attitude now.

missed the point mon frere
I will dispute that it is “earned” any more than any other team. You are just a fan of this one, as am I. We are hooked, and we dissect everything to the Nth degree. That is totally cool, it is how we deal with our addiction.
Your opinion is what it is, but you are not getting what I said about every team. Don’t stretch my meaning to “trying to draw penalties”. because that is what every damn team does every damn game, and the Canucks “rep” is no more extravagant other than the incredible amount of media narrative that fueled that whole thing.
Did I say events did not happen? No, or course not. But although the refs always put the whistle away, the story line got way too much juice. The Preds got called for diving multiple times in multiple series before bowing out. How about their “rep”? Marchand, in addition to being a talented goalscorer, is at least worthy of a higher level of acknowledgement of that shit as say a Burrows, who bit a finger. He did not dive in that series that I can remember. Lappy did, maybe Kes ( or maybe he just fell down easier being on one leg )…
Its not anything to do with “who us”. I just published a story where Daniel addresses the question in an interview. It pretty much sums up my feelings on this whole story from the start.
I know victors write the history, but the truth is probably a little more in the middle.
I man, Jonathan Toews dove a couple times in that first round series. Got a couple calls too. I imagine when people talk about him though, those qualities are farther down the list back East. Thats all I am saying.

Of course everyone dives
But few teams make it a focus of their game plan the way the Canucks did. In any case, it sounds like its over now and I’m glad. This teams too good to always be looking for the call and letting themselves get frustrated when it doesn’t come. It was one of my biggest frustrations last year, them always looking for the call no matter how small the rule infraction. When they focus on playing their game rather than what tepees refs are doing they are the best team in the league.

lets just agree to leave it here
but “gameplan” and “focus”? You are giving it entirely too much hyperbole!
Thats what I get a little miffed about. Ir was far from that. They played a puck possession style against a very good defensive team and lost.
They also outhit that team.
Sorry, can’t just let that line lie, but that is ridiculous. Everyone tries to get the refs in their favour, and will try and work the call, but to make it sound like it was a “gameplan” is just a trifle insulting to the team, you know?
Anyhow, agree to disagree

Insulting?
They said as much in interviews long before they played Boston. That they were going to let them do what they want and take advantage on the power play. I’m saying I hope the mind set now is let them do what they want, play through it and focus on their process. That’s what winners do. Forget lookinf for the power play because its out of your control and if they dry up, you get left wondering why, or feeling cheated and get distracted.

I find it insulting
not them. I do find it weird that the team that makes a concerted effort all season to not talk and stuff, gets accused of exactly that in the Final.
Bigger point you are making, I definitely agree with though.

Sadly yes....
Never saw any Canuck penalized for one other than for interference. Now everyone is waiting for them to slip up and make a bad check because of the rat face incident.

I disagree
I still see them going for hipchecks…but they’re missing more. I think it’s in their heads so they’re thinking about it and missing. I know there was at least one miss last game, possibly two (Hamhuis and I think Bieksa? Maybe edler? wasn’t one of the usual hip guys) although the second one might have just been a missed check skating backwards.

Have you seen a Canuck send a guy ass over tea kettle? I haven’t. It’s not because they are “missing”. At least I don’t think that’s the case the majority of the time.
