Canucks Acquire Rights Of Mike Duco

The Canucks acquired the 24 -year-old left winger's rights from the Florida Panthers in exchange for the rights to Sergei Shirokov, who last I checked returned to Russia. Count Duco is listed as 5'10" and 194 pounds. An enforcer at the NHL level. The Toronto native has only played in 12 NHL games, recording 0 points and 60 penalty minutes. His offence was more apparent for the AHL Rochester Americans last season where he scored 20 goals and 31 points in 67 games while also accumulating 126 PIMs and a -16 rating. Put the gun down, Cam.

-Duco's career stats at Hockey Database.

-Duco's fight cards at Hockeyfights.com.

-Duco's profile at Hockey's Future. His role thus far in the NHL has been as an enforcer which would merit situational call-ups. But he has some scoring ability and could be a serviceable fourth line, energy forward in the future.

Edit: Watch what you Tweet, Duco. Heh.

I wonder

If all this janssen talk and signing of ahl hopefuls makes anyone appreciate why I said Edmonton signing hordi was not a bad signing for them. It’s funny to me that some of the same people who were trying to explain to me why hordi shouldn’t even play in the NHL are now explaining why we should sign these guys.

by Canuckelhead on Jul 9, 2011 1:02 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

One really has something to do with the other? Is that what you are saying?

This guy looks primarily like a fighter, but who knows? Maybe he has some skill. Why folks were saying Hordy was a bad signing is he is a staged fighter kind of guy. Thats why he laid out the threats to Calgary and Van right away.

Thats job security. The problem most ( I, at least ) have with Hordy is his utter lack of hands, skating skills, and grasp of defensive zone coverage. He can hit, and fight. The rest of the game is foreign to him.

At least Mancari, for instance, has huge power forward upside. Hordy was never a point per game AHL player.

You may be right about some teams though. Look at the Ducks. Did they really need another fighter in JF Jacques? The Hawks got a psycho in Carcillo, and Mayers.

To me its a step back, and ignores the point that I think you might have missed (from me anyhow ) in the previous thread. Guys that can also play are more important than guys like Hordy, that cannot.

I want us to sign guys with some jam AND hockey skills. I don’t know about this guy, but the other two ( Mancari And Pinizzotto ) look to have some skill to bring as well.

Janssen might be needed to attend to the violence, he might not. But if the Canucks sign a heavy, lets hope he can play. Jannsen is no better than Hordy there, but from what I remember of him in Blues games, he displays more awareness of a team concept in his own end, at least!

I think I made it clear

In the last thread that I have no interest in the Canucks acquiring a fighter so Im not sure why you think I missed a point. Mancari is not a fighter and the only reason you think janssen is a better player than hordi is because he hasn’t been a Canuck yet. I have always said I have no interest in the Canucks signing hordi just curious why you think this guy or janssen are better than him?

by Canuckelhead on Jul 9, 2011 1:53 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

CH,

I said I think Janssen is a better player because in my estimation, he is. They both have the stats of a fighter.

Its funny, you keep hopping back and forth on the fighter thing. You seem to have a selective memory as well. Without taking the time to go through all your comments, you argued the very thing, that the Canucks need a fighter because teams like the Oilers etc hired “guns” like Hordy.

I think its just semantics, so whatever. Mancari says himself that he “likes to stand up for his guys”, though he did only have 4 fights in the last 2 years. Which is my point. I want guys that can fight when it comes up, and play when it does not. He, and Pinizzotto to a lesser degree, are probably Chicago bopund, but if the bigger one ( Mancari) can stick, I am OK with that instead of a Janssen guy.

But, if GMMG feels he needs a more established super heavy to deal with the Hordy, Jacques, Mayers etc signings, I would rather it be a guy that, to me, from what I remember of the times the Canucks playing the Blues the past 3 years, is the type that can at least be responsible in his own end. The production ( Janssen had a goal and 3 assists last year! )…well…thats why it would be nice if a guy with a better than point per game hands in the AHL…like Mancari, step up and take that spot.

To sum up. Mancari on potential and hands that would be a great addition to the 4th line. Janssen if MG feels it needed to indulge in the bloodsport desire that seems to have gripped the NHL GMs this offseason…I trust him to pick a guy that can play a little.

Looking at the stats, Hordy is actually the better plus/minus and (admittedly for each) pitiful points production. But I remember the Hordy of the stupid penalty, the wrong time to try and ply his trade, and his always being a step behind in his own end.

Janssen looked noticeable on the forecheck, hit at the right time, and while he of course takes penalties too, in the games we played them, I just remember a guy hard to play against in both ends. I would hope, if the rumours are true, that MG saw something similar.

No offense to your liking what Hordy brings, he just, to me at least, is not a very smart hockey player. Fantastic teammate, from all accounts. Wonderful human being. But his “hockey sense” is where he falls flat too much for me.

Mind you, you may be right. With that kind of player, there is going to be an occasion where you scream “WTF” at the screen. But hopefully CJ would elicit that less than DH did for me when he was here.

Just so it's clear

I NEVER said the canucks needed a fighter. At all. I came to hordi’s defense as a player who has proven he has value in the NHL not as a player the Canucks should acquire and I certainly never said the Canucks needed to acquire a player to fight him. I’m also the one that pointed out hordis comments were probably tongue in cheek. As for janssen looking good for the blues, I’m not sure how you saw anything in the four minutes he averaged for that less than deep team but his stats point to him being a player who has never, not once, been a player who is a plus player in pro hockey.

Averages 8 minutes per game… comparable to what Hodgeson, Bolduc and Oreskovich all got and solid for a 4th liner.

If he can carry over his success in the AHL to the NHL then he seems like the kind of fighter you need to have in today’s game… one who can actually bring something to the table beyond just fighting.

If he can carry over his success in the AHL to the NHL

The keyword being if. All he’s done in the NHL is fight. This year he played 2 games, and had 2 fights. In the AHL this year he had 12 fights.

I’m aware… he also put up 20 goals. If he scores at 30-50% that rate in the NHL and can be reliable for 8-10 minutes a night then he is a useful player.

great point.

I would worry about this kind of guy being expected to fight guys like the other “enforcers”, but there is always a place for guys with a little skill that are assholes to play against.

but in no way is Shirokov, at this point and maybe never, good enough consistently to be a contributor on an NHL team.

I should also mention that we found an answer to your Mikey Duco

Nothing official from the Sharks yet, but reliable outside sources say they’ve signed 32-year-old center Ben Guite, last seen in the NHL with Nashville for six games in the 2009-10 season. Guite also wore an Avalanche jersey for 169 games over three seasons, but his is reportedly a two-way contract and it’s a safe bet that he’s considered primarily as veteran depth for Worcester, though anything is always possible. UPDATE: Sharks now confirming Guite contract.

You guys may have already discussed this but how did Burke get Franson and Lombardi for basically just Lebda? I don’t see the upside for the Preds on this one at all.

by marcness52 on Jul 10, 2011 6:54 PM PDT reply actions

cleared cap space basically

Lombardi’s been concussed for almost a year so he’s a big question mark making big money, and Franson’s likely due for a big pay raise next season. Still a stupid trade I think but I see the reasoning behind it.

by Canuckk on Jul 10, 2011 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Also

Lombardi’s contract wasn’t insured because of his concussion history, which is why they would have had to pay him even if he didn’t play.

It was basically Franson for Lebda + 7M in cash
