To the surprise of no one, Canucks winger Jannik Hansen has filed for salary arbitration.
Hansen, who was awarded a salary of $825,000 last summer when the team took him to arbitration, is coming off his best NHL season and should be in position to cash in big on a new deal.
Hansen, 25, was a big part of the Canucks’ third line that was very good in the regular season and excellent in the playoffs. An excellent penalty killer, he scored a career-high 29 points in 82 games in the regular season. He had 3-6-9 in 25 playoff games.

Via The Province. His hearing will be later in the month. What do you think he'll get?

I don’t have a good feeling about this now. Wouldn’t be surprised if the arbitrator gave him north of 2M

I am betting he does not make it to arb this time. MG will get him signed before that. We all know how good he is at working to a deadline

I say 3 years at 5 mil.

I also don’t see production that justifies an almost 200% raise. I don’t think the arbitrator will give him over 2. 5M/3years seems quite reasonable.

He'll make more than $1.5M

If Malhotra can command $2.5 million a year as a UFA simply by being excellent defensively, Hansen can almost certainly negotiate his way to $1.5 million or more for the defensive acumen and versatility he so prominently displayed in the playoffs. He has a lot more negotiating power than he did last year, and arbitrators will take note of that if it does go to arbitration. I think it’s little more than wishful thinking to believe he’ll sign for anything under $1.5.

What is Hansen’s role with the team going to be? A 4th liner who kills penalties? Esp. when MayRay gets back. Wanna pay a 4th liner $2 million?

I don't think he will

get 2 million and I don’t think he will be on the fourth line. Hansen looked too good with Malhotra last year. I would imagine one of Sturm or Sammy will be 4th line when May Ray gets back until one of those guys, Raymond or Sammy or both, are traded for a winger for Kesler.

I’d be okay with a Hansen-Lapierre-Oreskovich fourth line next season. That would certainly keep other teams on their toes defensively without giving up many chances.

by Sandwich76 on Jul 6, 2011 11:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Fourth +

I think Hansen is perfect as a third liner, but if he’s on the fourth then he’s also going to get PK and “extra” time that’s always lying around on the ice. Team needs a jump? He’s in. Forward injured? He’s in. Someone not skating well? He’s in. That sort of thing.

Don't know who's a left winger or a right winger

but I would try Hansen with the twins and move Burr back with Kes. I think Jank will improve his offensive hands (he already has remarkable def hands) the longer he plays and will not get stuck in Bernier City. As well, knowing how thorough Canuck mgmt is, it seems a no brainer that they’re concentrating on increasing his offensive capabilities and will probably connect him with someone to work with once signed. He is not leaving the team! Mgmt realizes what a gem they have and will work hard with him to make him into a complete player and teaming him with the Sedins, in my mind, will get him there quicker.

you can't move burr back with kes

unless you move 2 of higgins, samuelsson, raymond, whoever else to third, hence moving people down to 4th hence having 2 million dollar guys on the 4th line with oreo and lappy. You could concievably move burrows to the third, but why on earth would we do that?

The thing is the perfect winger for Kes is Burrows.

You either find someone to play with Kesler or someone else to play with the Sedins, and you win.

(though it’s easier to find someone who can play with Kesler fo’sure)

by Wisp on Jul 6, 2011 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I gotta say

taking burr from the top line would be ridiculous short of him being injured.

IF Burr was he was injured, I’d say Hansen would be about the 6th guy in line for that spot on the top line.

1) Mikael Samuelsson
2) Cody Hodgson
3) Marco Sturm
4) Victor Oreskovich
5) Chris Higgins
6) Jannik Hansen

All I’m saying is Burrows plays great with both Kes and the Sedins. The ideal option is to clone him.

by Wisp on Jul 6, 2011 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Now you're on to something!

Hansen, Kelser, and Burr are all great two way players, but Kesler and Burr are also great at scoring goals so I wouldn’t want Hansen on the first line.

This is mostly a response to Bobby Canuck’s idea to have Hansen play with the Sedins.

looks much different. I think it goes something like:

1) Samuelsson
2) Rome
3) Sturm
4) Hansen
5) A pylon
6) Jason King
7) Hodgson (but only after begging Gillis to trade him for the pylon first)

I think he’s just glad Ballard isn’t a forward or I think he’d rather have an empty net all game long than give Ballard extra ice time.

Hard to give him 2 million

when Higgins, three 20 goal seasons, Sturm, seven 20 goal seasons and Burrows one 30 and two 20 goals seasons, all make right around 2. And Sturm was UFA. 1.5-1.7 per year for Hansen max.

You can’t use UFA deals as comparables though. My main worry was thinking about MacArthur last year getting 2.4M in arbitration after a not so great year. Granted MacArthur scores more in general than Hansen, but still

Yeah well you can't

use UFA gyus as comparable because they generally get more money. That was my point. Tough for Hansen to get more than a UFA. If the player files for Arb the team can walk away from the award no?

He has (had) some potential. With a moderately stacked Ducks team back in 08-09, he skated along side what I assume is Bobby Ryan and Chris Kunitz, and ended up with 32 points in 48 games.

I think it is easier

for a guy to take a home town discount when he is still making 4 or 5 million than for a guy looking to make more than a million a year for the first time. A guy like Hansen needs to make sure he gets paid. 3.5 million over 2 years invested properly can set you up well in case something happens to your career. But the more he gets the more secure his future, and his families future, becomes.

my point is just that it is easier to be loyal to a team when they are paying you 4 or 5 million than when they are paying you 800 thousand. Not that 800,000 dollars is a small sum in anyway.

4.39% EV 90 JOHANSSON,MARCUS – 22 KNUBLE,MICHAEL – 21 LAICH,BROOKS

Anyone over thirty...

…is old. It’s very freeing, actually: you don’t have to pretend to care what other people do or think any more. Peer pressure vanishes. Style? Who cares! Keeping up with music? Don’t bother! What do you drive? Whatever gets you there!

Really, it’s frikkin’ marvelous: revel in it.

by Thursday on Jul 7, 2011 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Well I never cared

what anyone thought about me and I don’t remember being peer pressured. But I think I have an A typical up bringing and high school experience. I went to a high school where it seemed like everyone got along pretty well. There were cliques and groups but I didn’t see much if any bullying or disputes.

But I will say being in my 30s isn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I don’t feel old yet but I do feel like I am in my prime.

ok some corrections after 40...
you don’t have to pretend to care what other people do or think any more.

Never did

Peer pressure vanishes.
that happened before 30.
Style? Who cares
Wrong wrong wrong…the style just changes. That not caring thing is probably more a symptom of having kids than of crossing 30.
Keeping up with music? Don’t bother!
Hah! I still do and always did listen to what I like. I rely on all the punks here and twitter to inform me of new stuff i’d never have found on my own. ie: mumford and sons, adele
What do you drive? Whatever gets you there!
Again, a symptom of kids i’d guess. I don’t care what others think of my ride, but I know that I want it to be of a certain level… I owned a saturn once…god I hated it…decided to never again buy a car just as a transportation tool with no regard for features, power or comfort. Not that the saturn was a bad car, it was just never a good car.

Ebbett

Vancouver quietly signed free agent center Andrew Ebbett to a one year contract yesterday, The 28 year old played 33 games last year for the Coyotes Scoring 2 goals with 3 assists. His best year was 08-09, where he played 48 games with Anaheim scoring 8 goals, and 24 helpers. Ebbett will likely replace Bolduc on the depth chart.
